The Brighton Speed Trials, in full The Brighton National Speed Trials, is commonly held to be the oldest running motor race. The first race was held in 1905 after Sir Harry Preston persuaded Brighton town council to tarmac the surface of the road adjacent to the beach between the Palace Pier and Black Rock in order to hold motor racing events. This stretch was renamed Madeira Drive in 1909 and the event is still held there, normally on the 2nd Saturday of September each year

    Wiki

Basically a 1/4 mile drag race, I used to compete in the Brighton Speed Trials but went along this year as a spectator, to catch up with some old racing friends. There was a lot of money in the paddock:

What did you used to compete with?

Still with me in the garage! 1600 Twin Cam Lancia (race spec engine) with 5 speed box - created way before BMW's MINI Copper was conceived. Ran low 13 secs but the brick aerodynamics limited my terminal to 110 mph.
