Some of the recent charts remind me somewhat of January 1937 which was a mild and very wet month (CET: 5.2) with high pressure to the ENE and low pressure in the Atlantic with neither giving way for much of the time and the UK under frequent winds with a southerly component.

It was a deeply frustrating month for cold lovers.

Finally the low pressure slipped further southwards allowing a colder SEly flow to develop and this brought snowfalls and sub-zero maxima to places. 6 inches of snow in places for parts of N. England.

It was short lived and with a new month reverted into the mild wet mode that dominated January.

Interesting that the images and reports of heavy snow and drifting in the southwest happened in an average month temperature-wise. Maybe it's perception but they might seem extreme now even in a cold month.

With the exception of North Wales and parts of Lancashire extreme care was reported to be necessary on hills and bends throughout the country.

Some things never change.
