WEATHER ADVICE

Category: Level 4

Weather type: Severe Gales, Heavy Rain and Possible Avalanches

Affecting: Whole of the UK

Date Valid For: Sunday 14th March

Date Issued: 20:55 - Saturday 13th March 2004

UPDATED: 12 Noon - Sunday 14th March 2004

Discussion: Rain will move across the UK in the next 24 hours creating some hazardous driving conditions and spray will also be a problem for motorists. Following the cold weather we could have greasy roads which will make the road surfaces slippery.

Strong winds will accompany this rain with gusts of up to 50MPH possible in exposed places across the country.

As well as this, there is an added hazard of avalanches in the mountains of Scotland as milder weather brings melting and possible avalanches which could lead to localised flooding in vally areas.

In addition, there is a risk of gales or severe gales affecting Northern Scotland tonight as the low pressure centre passes close by. Winds could well gust up to 80MPH in exposed areas, which is enough to cause dangerous travelling conditions, a risk of structural damage and bring trees down.

Please bear in mind that this is an "Advice" and not an "Alert" as we expect most populated areas to escape the worse of the conditions.

Confidence Level: (80%)

Note: This advice should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.

Expect further updates as and when needed.
