Chat Room Trial

For a limited period we are going to be trialling a new chat room system on the forum. It'll be open during busy periods - ie before or during weather events etc, and is designed to allow a maximum of 250 members on it at once.

The hope is that it will allow those who want to chat in a real time, more relaxed environment to do so, and this will also free up the forum a little bit from some of the quicker 1 line style posts which can tend to clutter the model thread etc and would be more suited to chat.

A chat room is something that has been requested a lot over the years and up to now we've resisted the temptation to try it, but we felt now would be a good time to give it a spin. As mentioned above, this is a trial to see how things go, so please let us know your thoughts on both the system and the idea.

You can find the link to the chat room at the top of the forum in the menu.

Very good idea!!!

But it will surely need a Moderator in there!! topics can very easy boil over.

Good idea! but i fear when convo in full swing(250 people) you may not be able to chase the chat.

Jeez, it got busy - seen less people turn up in my local supermarket :cold:

I say give it time, worth a trial at least..

Thanks Paul, was excellent last night, no problems! My only concern is that with 25 people it was a bit fast moving, with 250 people it would be impossible.

That's the nature of chat unfortunately - for proper discussion that everyone can follow the forum will always be the best spot, but for a bit of light relief and fast flowing real time stuff chat's should hopefully be a decent alternative!

Aye mate, it's a great idea - but, it's one I'll have to leave to the younger members! :)

I don't see it taking off, to be honest. I went in there and it was like a morgue. I won't be bothering with it!

But good idea to try it out.

The chat room is unlikely to be a full time part of the forum, once we've trialled it we'll only enable it on certain occasions when it's really busy during and prior to weather events etc. We'll also hopefully use it for special chat sessions with guests etc.

Cheers Paul, chat room's a great idea and I'm really enjoying it! ;)

One issue though is every time I leave it or navigate away, Firefox crashes? Is it just me, or have others seen it too? Firefox 3.5 it is. :)

Maybe it's just a hint that I should just stay in there permanently! :) :)

Got the same firefox version as you and does the same to me. Didn't happen the first time though but recently yes.
