During the second half of January 1907, an intense high pressure over NE Europe developed and moved SW centred around the Baltic states on the 23rd January. The barometic reading for Riga that day was a very high 1067mb. A ridge from the intense anticyclone pushed westwards across the UK and along its southern flank, a very cold airstream affected the central and southern parts of the Europe and into the UK.

By the 23rd most of the UK were recording readings of 1042mb+ with Aberdeen having the highest reading of 1052mb

There was interesting temperature contrast depending whether you were to the north or south of the ridge axis. For instance, the Faroes at 8am on the 23rd had a temperature reading of 7.8C, whilst Rome was just 1C. Seydisfjord in Iceland recorded a high of 15C, whilst Tunis was just 9.4C

In the UK, Woburn recorded a maximum of just -3.8C, Totland Bay on the 24th recorded a minimum of -6.4C and at Ryde the sea was frozen up to 20 yards out. Skating was possible on lakes and ponds during this spell.
