I think humankind needs some humility.

Just a shame earthquakes kill the innocent, rather than those who foment chaos.

Here in NZ ......

Residents living in low lying areas of Banks Peninsula are being prepared for evacuation. Banks Peninsula is just to the south of Christchurch. A wave of 1-3 metres is expected to hit.

I was supposed to be on a fishing trip this morning and that has just been cancelled due to the potential risk of a tsunami.

What time are you expecting the wave to reach you?

Earthquakes take whoever is there they don't prey on the innocent.

Sorry been catching up with some sleep. It was expected to arrive at 0900NZ.

There has been reports of strange tidal conditions all the way up the east coast. Gisbourne (north island) reported the water level in the harbour dropping by 1 metre and 10 minutes later the water rose again by the same amount.

The main threat to NZ should be over by now.

The power of Mother Nature, Old Man River and Neptune, huh? It should really tell all those enviromental alarmists where to fit into in the grand scale of things, doesn't it? Unfortunately - and looking at the climate section on here for the first time in months - it hasn't.

Interesting set of movements over South America and of course Haiti.

I remember at uni, when I minored in geophysics I read a journal article of the relationship of carribean, Nazca and South American plate movements and of course the inter-relationship with tsunami. I wish I could remember the specifics, but its was something to do with depending which plate slipped. If the Nazca plate moved in one direction, then a small element of disturbance would because along its pacific plate boundary which would dissipate some of the effects of the water movement. I was never sure of it, because they never had any specific measurements to proove the theory. Its very difficult to determine the direction of plate movement during a slip without very precise measurements. But, it could stand as a theory at least.

Tragic all the same and these things always happen in proximity due to the very nature of the feeback loops. Its always even more awful when your second or third in line. Peaople reach to their pockets to help number 1...but number 2 and number 3...always struggle from the recovery efforts of number 1. I have no doubt the international community will again offer assistance.
