Mount Etna erupted above the Sicilian town of Catania early Saturday morning, spewing lava and sending a plume of ash into the air, the BBC reported. Air traffic at Catania airport was temporarily halted because of the smoke, but no fatalities or injuries have been reported. Authorities lifted the airport closure before dawn. Mount Etna is an active volcano on the east coast of the Italian island of Sicily. At 10,922 feet high at its summit, Mount Etna is Europe’s tallest and most active volcano, and is in a state of almost constant activity. It has erupted regularly for more than 3,500 years. In September of this year, observers reported a series of small and sporadic ash emissions.

Volcano Shiveluch on Kamchatka again has spewed ash up to ten km above sea level. It creates no danger for the population. No ash falls have been reported, the Kamchatka office of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences told Itar-Tass on Thursday. The ash emission was reported late on October 30. Satellites recorded a cloud of ash from the volcano at an altitude of about five km above sea level. It was moving northeast 150 km away from Shiveluch over the Bering Sea. According to the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), the volcano has the "orange" alert code, next after the highest, warning about danger for aircraft. All the services concerned are informed. Shiveluch is the northernmost and one of the most active volcanoes on the Kamchatka Peninsula. It has erupted with short periods of calm for about ten years. The volcano is located 450 km northeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. It is 3,283 m high. The highest active part, Young Shiveluch, is 2,8 km above sea level. The diameter is 45-50 km.

Shiveluch Volcano in the Kamchatka Peninsula has again spewed an ash column to a height of 4 km above sea level, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) reported. The volcanic outburst was recorded on Friday morning. The eruption lasted for about 10 minutes. There have been no reports about ash fall in nearby settlements. The eruption poses no danger to the population. Exerts have assigned to Shiveluch the orange aviation colour code - the second-level hazard to aircraft. According to KVERT, the giant mount may start to spew ash to a height of 10 km above sea level at any moment. All the concerned services have been warned about it. The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry’s (EMERCOM) main department for Kamchatka Krai has advised travel companies not to organise trips to the areas surrounding the volcano. There are no tourist groups there now. Shiveluch is the northernmost and one of the most active volcanoes of Kamchatka. It has been erupting with short intervals for about 10 years. The volcano is located 450 km northeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Its altitude is 3,283 metres. The highest point of the active part of the volcano, called Young Shiveluch is at 2.8 km above sea level. The diameter of the volcano base is 45-50 km. The total area - at least 1,300 square km.

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): Since the larger explosions on 27 Oct, the volcano has been a bit calmer with on average 2 explosions per day ejecting ash plumes to 7-10,000 ft (2-3 km) altitude.

Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia): Explosive activity from the summit crater continued to occur intermittently. At 16:00 on 31 Oct, an explosion produced a small ash plume and an avalanche of blocks on the ESE flank that traveled about 800 m down the flank. Other explosions were reported to have occurred during the night 31 Oct-1 Nov at 23:17 and 23:30 (local time).

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): No significant change in activity have occurred recently. The volcano produces frequent (on average 3 per hour) steam and sometimes small ash emissions / explosions and continues to show weak crater glow at night.

Santa María / Santiaguito (Guatemala): In recent days the eruptive activity has increased, in particular towards more effusive activity. The Caliente lava dome produced a higher rate of lava extrusion at the edges of the dome and explosions at a rate of approx. one per hour with ash plumes of up to 500 m drifting in westerly directions.

The volcano observatory warns that rapid accumulation of fresh deposits (lava flows and tephra) the risk of pyroclastic flows generated on the steep flanks of the dome is elevated, mainly on the east, south and western flanks.

Pacaya (Guatemala): Mild to moderate strombolian activity with ejections of incandescent lava to heights of 50-100 m above the Mackenney crater continues.

Fuego (Guatemala): Weak to moderate strombolian activity at the summit craters continues with little changes. Ash plumes rose to up to 500 m above the crater and drifted about 10 km in westerly directions, where light ash falls occurred in San Pedro Yepocapa and the villages of Sangre de Cristo, Morelia, Panimaché. The stronger explosions produce often loud rumblings and incandescent avalanches on the upper slopes.

Reventador (Ecuador): Sporadic explosions of small to moderate size continue to occur at the summit vent. A pilot observed an ash plume at 22,000 ft (6.7 km) altitude last night.

Tungurahua (Ecuador): Activity is at moderate levels, characterized by relatively infrequent and small ash explosions.

During early October, strombolian activity had increased and explosions have become more frequent (60-100 per day) and ash-rich, sometimes accompanied by loud shock waves. Between 20 and 23 October, activity started to decrease to 20-35 explosions per day with steam and ash columns 2-3 km high, drifting mainly to westerly directions and causing fine ash fall in Palitagua, Chogluntús, El Manzano, Penipe, and Riobamba .

Deflation was recorded in late October, interpreted as the result of degassing and depressurization caused by the numerous explosions. IGPEN is not certain whether the decrease in activity during late Oct is a signal that the eruptive phase is ending or whether it will increase again in the near future.

Jebel Zubair (Red Sea): A new island has emerged in late Oct at the submarine eruption site, but the exact date is currently not known. At the moment, satellite images do not allow to determine whether eruptive activity at the island continues, but suggest that it is currently low or has stopped. If any, it might be strombolian or the effusion of small lava flows. The last ash /steam plume was spotted a MODIS satellite image on 30 Oct.

http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/volcano-activity/news/38515/Volcanic-activity-worldwide-3-Nov-2013-Stromboli-Santa-Mara-Santiaguito-Shiveluch-Jebel-Zuba.html

Stromboli (Eolian Islands, Italy): Activity has remained similar since our previous visit 9 days ago: most activity is at the NW crater (towards Ginostra), where 3 vents are active and produce mild to strong strombolian explosions (to heights of up to 250 m approx) at rates of one every 5 minutes approximately, mostly from the eastern vent and sometimes from the tall hornito to the north. The eastern vent also shows weak spattering and continuous glow, suggesting a high magma level within its conduit.

No activity was observed from the central crater, and the NE vent activity is weak with infrequent (20-30 minutes intervals) loud gas emissions, and only sometimes lava ejections to heights of 100-150 m.

Etna (Sicily, Italy): Tremor and surface activity have continued to decrease. Once more, Etna has surprised us, this time by NOT producing a second paroxysm shortly (few days) after the one 26 Oct (as it often did after the first such eruption in the past).

Klyuchevskoy (Kamchatka): The eruption seems to have ended. No more lava flows or strombolian explosions were seen during the past days.

KVERT reports moderate seismic activity of the volcano and strong degassing at the summit.

Karymsky (Kamchatka): A volcanic ash plume was observed yesterday at 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude, indicating a likely explosion of moderate size had occurred earlier. The volcano has been in a state of intermittent strombolian to vulcanian explosive activity for years.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): Extrusion of viscous lava at the dome continues to feed at least 2 thick lava flows on the SW, NW and NE slopes. Two larger partial dome collapses occurred yesterday, producing pyroclastic flows and ash plumes that rose to altitudes of 23,000 ft (7 km).

Indonesian authorities evacuated people at four villages within 3 kilometers of Mount Sinabung, in North Sumatra, after the volcano erupted, according to the National Disaster Management Agency. The government raised the status to stand by, the second-highest level, last night after the mountain spewed ash as high as 7,000 meters and the number of volcanic quakes increased, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman at the disaster agency said by phone. He didn’t provide the number of people evacuated. Mount Sinabung is located about 40 miles southwest of Medan, the provincial capital of North Sumatra. About 13,000 people were evacuated when the volcano erupted in September.

A remote Russian volcano may be readying for a new eruption, according to NASA's Earth Observatory. On Nov. 5, NASA's Earth-Observing 1 satellite spotted ash above the 9,702-foot-tall (2,958 meters) Zhupanovksy volcano, which recently woke from a decades-long slumber. The snowy peaks also shows signs of phreatic explosions " the stupendous blasts that result from hot lava meeting snow, ice or water, the Earth Observatory reported. Zhupanovksy's latest activity started on Oct. 23, when the volcano spewed ash 16,400 feet (5 kilometers) into the sky. It was the first explosive eruption at the volcano since 1959, according to KVERT, the Kamchatka Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, which monitors volcanic and earthquake hazards in the Russian peninsula. The initial blast of ash and volcanic gases was followed by several days of phreatic bursts and strong gas emissions from fumaroles (gas vents) at the peak, KVERT reported.

Etna volcano - eruption update

New ash explosions from New SE crater

Update Wed 06 Nov 14:02

Since about an hour ago, some relatively strong explosions re-appeared to occur at the New SE crater. This could be a signal that it is heading towards a new paroxysm in the near future. Tremor continues to rise slowly. The next days (if not hours) will probably give the answer.

The Karo regency administration in North Sumatra has declared an emergency response period following the increasing frequency of Mount Sinabung's eruptions in the last few days. Regency administration spokesperson Jhonson Tarigan said the period was effective from this week for an indefinite period, or until the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) recommended otherwise. The volcano has been placed on alert status as it is continuously spewing volcanic ash. The latest eruption took place on Tuesday at around 2:30 p.m. local time when the volcano sent a plume of smoke 3-kilometers into the air, while the spread of ash was around 10 km to the southwest. Jhonson said the eruption was strong as it lasted around 20 minutes and was heard at tourist resort Berastagi, which is located around 15 km from the volcano and 60 km from Medan. No casualties were reported in the eruption. Jhonson said at least 1,700 people from four subdistricts of Simacem, Bekerah, Mardinding and Suka Meriah had been evacuated due to the eruptions, as their homes were very close to the volcano's crater."Areas within a 3-km radius of Sinabung's crater have to be cleared, that's why people must evacuate," he said. The evacuees were placed in three evacuation centers in Payung, Tiga Nderket and Naman Teran districts under the responsibility of the respective district heads. Romel Karo-Karo, a local community figure, said most of the evacuees were traumatized by the eruptions. "They are very traumatized, especially when eruptions happen at night when they cannot see the volcano, but can suddenly feel the ash covering their villages," Romel said as he was evacuating people in Naman Teran on Tuesday. The two eruptions on Monday night, for example, terrified nearby residents as they also sounded very loud. "The second eruption at about 9:30 p.m. brought with it searing material," said Romel, adding that the first eruption on Monday lasted about eight minutes while the second one lasted about five minutes. PVMBG head Hendrasto said on Tuesday the alert status of Mt. Sinabung was maintained as its eruptions continued. This, he said, was based on the result of observations made from the Mt. Sinabung observation post in Simpang Empat district from Oct. 29 until Nov. 2. Apart from that, the eruption tremor amplitude and the duration of the tremors were also increasing from day-to-day, he added.Previously, thousands of people living on Mt. Sinabung's slopes were evacuated when the volcano, which is 2,460 meters above sea level, erupted in mid September — the first eruption since August 2010. The 2010 incident, which was the first eruption in almost 410 years, claimed several lives and displaced thousands. Before the eruption, the volcano was categorized as dormant, or a type B volcano, but was later categorized as dangerous or a type A volcano. According to the PVMBG, type A volcanoes are those that have erupted at least once since 1600, type B volcanoes have not erupted since 1600 but still show signs of volcanic activity, and type C volcanoes have not erupted at all in recorded history. Like any other area around other volcanoes, the soil around Mt. Sinabung is very fertile. Such conditions have made Karo famous for its agricultural products, such as potato and oranges, which are marketed to Jakarta and other cities.

Update Sat 09 Nov 09:21

Very infrequent explosions (at least one) occurred during the night, and tremor has again picked up a slowly rising trend, but is far from conclusive at the moment whether and when a next paroxysm might occur. Strangely, many of the previous ones have occurred on Saturdays (as if to provide a special weekend show for the Catanese people)...
An explosion around shortly past 23:08 (LT) on the picture attached was relatively strong. Guides from Etna confirmed that some of the explosions during the past days threw bombs as far as the Torre del Filosofo area. Access to the area above 2500 m is currently limited.

As many as 4,300 residents in five villages in Karo regency, North Sumatra, were evacuated following increasing threats of volcanic ash, pyroclastic flows and molten lava, caused by Mount Sinabung's strong eruptions on Monday. The recent evacuation was carried out on Monday when a joint team comprising personnel from the police, the Indonesian Military (TNI), and the local administration evacuated 2,500 residents in Gurukinayan village. Karo regency administration spokesman Jhonson Tarigan said residents in Gurukinayan were evacuated because the village, located around 4 kilometers from the volcano, was already covered in volcanic ash. Jhonson added that the government refused to risk allowing residents to remain in their homes as volcanic ash emitted by the volcano had reached the village. "Mount Sinabung again erupted strongly [on Monday] and discharged volcanic ash, pyroclastic flows and molten lava. The eruption threatened residents living in Gurukinayan, so we have evacuated them," Jhonson told The Jakarta Post. He said the volcano erupted twice on Monday morning, the first at 6:14 a.m. and the second at 7 a.m. He added the first eruption was more powerful, spewing volcanic ash as high as 4,000 meters, followed by pyroclastic clouds and molten lava that flowed down the slopes of the mountain between 500 and 1,000 meters from the crater.Jhonson said during the first eruption, volcanic ash reached Gurukinayan village and caused panic among residents. The village, he added, was not included in the danger zone as it is located beyond the 3-kilometer radius. Jhonson said residents from five villages had been evacuated following the first eruption two weeks ago. Four of the five villages are located within the 3-kilometer radius. They are Simacem, Bekerah, Suka Meriah and Mardinding, while Gurukinayan is located outside the 3-kilometer danger zone. "We have evacuated 4,300 people from the five villages," said Jhonson, adding the evacuees were accommodated in a number of shelters in Kabanjahe, Tiga Nderket, Paung and Namanteran districts. Disaster Response commander Let. Col. Meyer Putong, who is also Tanah Karo Military Command chief, said the evacuees' were in good condition. He added they were not allowed to return home until conditions improved. "Mount Sinabung erupts almost every day, so conditions aren't safe for evacuees to return home," Putong said, adding the emergency response status was still imposed. The Karo regency administration has declared an emergency response period following the increasing frequency of Mount Sinabung's eruptions since Nov. 5.The imposition of the emergency response period has forced evacuees, who are mainly farmers, to suffer losses. Their farms can no longer be tilled as they are covered by thick ash. North Sumatra Agriculture Office head M. Roem said farmers suffered losses of more than Rp 4 billion (US$345,930) due to the eruptions. "As many as 4,467 hectares of unattended farmland in Payung, Tiga Nderket and Namanteran districts are affected by the eruptions," said Roem. He added that besides the 4,467 hectares of unattended farmland covered by volcanic ash, 3,440 hectares were also impacted by the eruptions, but they could still be cultivated by residents. The eruptions have also disrupted the supply of food commodities, in particular vegetables, from North Sumatra to several other areas in Sumatra, including Batam in Riau Islands. Karo is widely known for its agricultural products, such as potatoes and oranges, which are marketed to Jakarta and cities across Sumatra.

More than 5,000 people have fled their homes in western Indonesia in recent days following a series of violent volcanic eruptions, an official said Tuesday. Mount Sinabung on the north of Sumatra island has been hurling out red-hot ash, rocks and torrents of glowing lava up to seven kilometres (four miles) into the air since the start of the month. Villagers from nearby Karo district are being evacuated as the volcano, which erupted in September for the first time since 2010, continues to spew ash and rocks. "So far, 5,265 people have been evacuated from seven villages," local government spokesman Robert Peranginangin told AFP. "They were all very scared as the volcano has not shown signs of slowing down." Although the government has called for people living within three kilometres (1.9 miles) of the volcano to be evacuated, Peranginangin said those living beyond the danger zone were also fleeing their homes. "They just don't feel safe and are panicking. They prefer to stay in shelters, like mosques and churches," he said, adding the number of evacuees was expected to go up. National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the volcano erupted again early Tuesday, spewing clouds of hot gas, although the eruption was smaller than on previous days. Indonesia has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the "Ring of Fire" between the Pacific and Indian oceans. In August five people were killed and hundreds evacuated when a volcano on a tiny island in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted.

Etna (Sicily, Italy): 2 new sets of pictures from the beginning and end of the 10-11 Nov paroxysm:
Strombolian activity at New SE crater
Steam ("smoke") rings

Marapi (Western Sumatra, Indonesia): A small eruption occurred this morning (9 am local time), producing an ash plume that rose about 350 m according to local news.
Marapi has been showing increased activity since August 2011. VSI keeps the volcano at level 2 alert (out of 4) and recommends not to approach the summit within a radius of 3 km, as stronger eruptions could occur any time.

Santa María / Santiaguito (Guatemala): Activity has been elevated. The effusion rate of the Caliente dome is high enough to produce constant block avalanches from the eastern rim. Explosive activity has been weak with ash plumes reaching 500-700 m height drifting into southerly directions.

Pacaya (Guatemala): Strombolian activity from the Mackenney crater continued during the past days with fluctuating intensity. Ejections of bombs reached about 50 m above the crater yesterday, INSIVUMEH reports.

Fuego (Guatemala): A new lava flow towards the Taniluya canyon (S side) started on 11 Nov and reached a length of 500 m this morning. Explosive activity at the summit has remained stable with occasional weak to moderate explosions ejecting ash plumes to up to 700 m height and producing sometimes loud shock waves.

MODIS / Terra satellite image 11 Nov showing the gas plume and discolored water plume
Signs of weak continuing or renewed activity could be spotted again on recent satellite data after few weeks with no evidence of activity.
The attached MODIS / Terra satellite image from 11 Nov shows a gas plume drifting NE from the new island as well as a discolored water plume extending south. The discolored sea water is likely caused by dissolved volcanic gasses (H2S in particular).
The absence of steam suggests that there is no lava entering the sea and no submarine effusive activity.

Bagana (Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea): Explosions continue. An ash plume was spotted this morning at 9,000 ft (2,7 km) altitude extending 60 nautical miles to the west.

Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia): Eruptions seem to increase. Over the past days, ash explosions have occurred at rates of 1-2 per day. Ash plumes rose to 10,000-12,000 ft (3-3.6 km) altitude. At least one pyroclastic flow occurred on 11 Nov, reaching about 1 km length.
Several 1000 people have been evacuated from nearby villages at the foot of the volcano and a (dangerously small) 3 km exclusion zone around the volcano is in place.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Activity has remained stable at low levels. CENAPRED reported 61 weak emissions of mostly steam, gas and only occasionally minor amounts of ash during the 24 hour observation interval between 12-13 Nov.

Reventador (Ecuador): The activity consisting of sporadic small to moderate explosions continues but has decreased after 2 November. On that day, a small pyroclastic flow descended on the west flank of the active cone, reaching a length of 300-400 m. Explosions produced plumes of up to about 2 km height and light ash fall occurred in San Rafael village located 8 km east of the volcano.
The following webcam time-lapse show the activity during 2-3 Nov when the weather was unusually clear. There are small explosions and a small tornado next to the cone caused by turbulence between ambient and rising hot air.

Aso (Kyushu): The Japan Meteorological Agency reported in its latest activity summary (for September 2013) a seismic crisis that started on 23 September evening. An survey of SO2 emissions 2 days later showed an increase of gas release as well, suggesting a magmatic intrusion was taking place. No eruption has taken place since then.
Japanese volcanologists immediately raised the alert level from 1 to 2, as there is a possibility of sudden explosions that could throw blocks to distances of perhaps as far as 1 km. The new alert level means that the active Nakadake 1 crater is currently closed for access.
In late September seismicity remained high, but with a declining trend. No other information was given in the report.

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): The volcano has picked up activity again. Over the past days, the Showa crater has been producing near-constant ash emissions and several vulcanian explosions with ash plumes rising up to 14,000 ft (4.2 km) altitude.

Klyuchevskoy (Kamchatka): The volcano remains active. It produces a variable but often intense steam plume with possibly some ash. On webcam images, there are sporadic small explosions visible, suggesting that weak strombolian activity continues at the summit. A large steam ring was produced this morning (see image / video) - similar to what we have observed at Etna last Monday.

The last recorded signal from the Torre del Filosofo seismic station (ETFI), showing the tremor intensity at unprecedented levels. If the eruption size is more or less proportional to the integral of the tremor amplitude, this illustrates the size of the paroxysm:

Etna (Sicily, Italy): Activity at the New SE crater has decreased during the night, but probably weak strombolian explosions still occur from time to time. At the moment, weather is very bad and visible observations difficult. The tremor decreased as well, but has gained again and continues to show an overall increasing trend, similar to the days before the 10-11 Nov paroxys

A thermal hot spot was visible on satellite data from 9 Nov, suggesting that some activity continues or has resumed at the remote volcano.

Superheated ash and gas flowing down the slopes of Indonesia's Sinabung volcano signals the intensity of eruptions may be increasing at the fiery mountain, according to local officials. More than 5,000 people have been evacuated from towns and villages in North Sumatra's Karo Regency since Mount Sinabung awoke in October after a three-year dormancy. Karo is an agricultural region that supplies vegetables for surrounding islands. The evacuation and devastating ash fall have affected crop harvests, leading to higher prices on vegetables and chilies elsewhere in Indonesia, according to the Jakarta Post. The Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation warned people not to approach within 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) of Mount Sinabung.

Glow from Etna's New SE crater

Current tremor signal (ESLN station, INGV Catania)

Explosions continue at the New SE crater. The weather is mostly bad and visibility is limited, but the glow seen on the webcams speaks for itself. Tremor continues to climb slowly. Are we in for another paroxysm soon?
