Starting out in Fort Collins and using today as a Travel Day to get into position for what could be an Interesting day in the Dakotas Tomorrow. Gambling on this being the last major Chance for Tornadoes for Tour 3 and using Saturday as a Travel day back to DFW. Along the way on Saturday we should be running into Storms as well.

So target today is Rapid City (South Dakota)For a well deserved Steak Meal!

Lovely part of the world, the Black Hills of western South Dakota. It's a limestone outcrop that is not directly part of the Rockies. Top elevations are about 2000 m asl. Mount Rushmore is in there somewhere.

If you guys have time or the storm chase takes you this way, the road south of the interstate in the Badlands National Monument is quite scenic and on a clear day you can see 150 miles there. There's a huge western "drug store" (emporium) at Wall near the east end of that route (east of Rapid City on the interstate).

I was in Pierre SD on a summer holiday trip in a heat wave in Aug 1973 and had a severe storm hit the campground (camping in a van) -- the picnic table was blown across the campground road into the next lot and part of a tree came down near us. We were at a restaurant at the time, luckily. It was showing 106 F on one of those digital thermometers in Pierre before that storm hit.

Good luck tomorrow, the visibility in western South Dakota should be a real plus for your activities.

Am liking the look of tomorrow, but not waving goodbye to the Supercells as they head into Canada where our cars are not allowed LOL

Aye, it is a truly beautiful area. Shame you have to rush back to DFW. A down day in the black hills would be amazing. The scenic highways around that area are also amazing (The Needles highway especially) as also is Mt Rushmore and the Badlands. Been in Wall several times and never visited the Drug store. That place is advertised on the interstate every half a mile for about 150 miles either side of the town!

It's looking quite good for later "today" (Friday) -- bet you won't have to go too far to find some good storms. Will have a look at the 12z run and see what's happening. Full moon tonight (the moon just passed the full phase around 23z on Thursday.
