Southern England was battered by unsually severe gales for September on the 16th of 17th of that month in 1935.

    98mph at Pendennis Castle

    96mph at St Mary's. Scilly

    92mph at Lizard and Manston

    88mph at Cardington

    81mph at Calshot

    80mph at Larkhill

    77mph at Lymphe

    72mph at Dover

Many telegraph wires were brought down, trees uprooted, and lives were lost at sea and on land. One unsual effect was a thick deposit left on may windows in Cornwall that varied from dark brown to grey and had a salty taste.
