Reports just filtering through locally of an event a few days ago. Please excuse the usual media titling of a 'mini' tornado!

Roofs damaged as tornado strikes

Published on Wednesday 22nd December 2010 2:00 PM

MINI-TORNADOES ripped through parts of Eastbourne and brought tiles and roofs off homes at the weekend. East Sussex Fire and Rescue were called out to Hereford Court, Badlesmere Road and Kipling Walk on Saturday (December 18) after residents reported that strong winds had caused damage to their homes. Frederick Riddle, 84, who has lived in Badlesmere Road with his wife Rosemary for 27 years, says he has never seen weather like it.

“It only lasted a few seconds but the winds were so strong and the hail stones sounded like a machine gun as they hit the kitchen window,†said Mr Riddle. “It went extremely dark and we had a rumble of thunder too.†The couple lost tiles from their roof and firefighters were called out to make the area safe. Mr Riddle says he is now having trouble claiming on his home cover as his insurers say the wind was only 18mph. He added, “It was much more than 18mph because the trees in our road were bending right over and our heavy wheel-barrow in the back garden was blown 15 feet up the garden.†“We do get strong winds here but I have never seen it that bad before.â€

Fire-fighters were also called to Kipling Walk after a garage roof ended up in a neighbouring garden. Residents in the Langney cul-de-sac also told the Gazette that the roof of a house had lifted in the high winds. East Sussex Fire and Rescue confirmed two appliances had attended the incidents which were believed to have been caused by mini-tornadoes. No-one in known to have been injured in the freak weather conditions.

The mini-tornadoes came as Eastbourne was affected by snow and ice for the second time this year.

I was in town at the time and there was a terrific hailstorm, but I cannot comment on the weather nearer to the site although I have a workshop near-by, so might go and do a late recce tomorrow if people think its a genuine tornado and still worth checking out?

OK, been out and surveyed the sites including the damaged allotments in Gorringe Road that aren't mentioned in the on-line article, but feature in the hard copy, local paper report:

Kipling Walk. Damage to two adjacent garages, roofs completely removed but no obvious damage to either structures or vegetation outside of these two buildings:

In the Gorringe Road allotments, there was more obvious and wider damage in a 20M wide, by 80M long strip:

Finally, damage to the ridge tiles of one house in Badlesmere Road:

All the damage is of course several days old and has been attended to, to some extent. The damage is in a very small area and relatively light in all cases, but is spread about 4- 5 miles apart over Eastbourne.

I remember taking part in a sea fishing competition a few years ago based along by the martello towers in pevensey. I cannot remember what time of year it was but I do remember seeing a huge water spout out to sea that lasted 20 minutes before it disappeared.so the channel seems likely to attract tornadoes from time to time.

Something been through those areas thats for sure. could be a small tornado thats hopped across with touching down in places then it disapears. if it was after dark it wouldn't of been visible i don't think.

There you go Harry have edited it so it is factually correct for you :smiliz19:

Anyone thought about heavy updraft winds, and did anyone see a tornado? or a funnel cloud?
