Something that has been absent during January 2011 and that has been severe gales. On the 28th of January 1927, there were severe gales as a deep depression approached NW Scotland.

At 1.40pm, a gust of 109mph was recorded at Dunfanaghy in Donegal. The hourly mean speed at one stage was 74mph.

Other high gusts

108mph at 3.30pm at Tiree

104mph at Paisley

102mph at Renfrew

92mph at Kerwick and Pendennis

Unsurprisingly, numerous trees were uprooted
