Central Europe on alert for flooding

Homes have been evacuated across southern Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland as rivers reach dangerously high levels. The Czech capital Prague is on high alert as authorities fear a repeat of the catastrophic floods of August 2002. The River Vltava has inundated towns and villages upstream of the capital, and one person is known to have died. The German cities of Passau and Rosenheim have declared a state of emergency. Authorities in Passau, which lies at the confluence of three rivers in Bavaria, say they expect the Danube to reach 10.5m by Sunday evening and have requested help from the German army. The BBC's correspondent in Prague says firemen have been putting up metal flood barriers and volunteers filling sandbags as the Czech capital prepares for a swell of floodwater. Prime Minister Petr Necas has called a special cabinet session to co-ordinate the emergency response.

Cottage collapse

The woman who died in the Czech Republic was killed when her cottage collapsed. Two more people are missing after their raft overturned on a swollen river. At least four people have died or are missing due to the floods in Germany and Switzerland in recent days, according to the Associated Press. Bavaria's flood alert service warns that the forecast of continuing heavy rain is likely to worsen the flooding affecting the Danube and the Inn, among other rivers in the area. The Munich-based newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reports that rivers in Saxony and Baden-Wuerttemberg, as well as in Bavaria, have burst their banks. Bavaria's premier, Horst Seehofer, has discussed the floods with Chancellor Angela Merkel and has called a crisis meeting for Sunday afternoon, the paper reports. In the Austrian city of Salzburg a man was found dead after being swept away as he worked on flood defences. Two further people are missing in the Salzburg area, according to the Salzburger Nachrichten. The Austrian army was called in to help civil authorities in the settlement of Taxenbach, south of Salzburg.

At long last, summer is on its way with a sizzling 80F

BRITAIN is about to sizzle in the “hottest week of summer†as temperatures soar higher than the Mediterranean. The mercury is expected to rocket to 80F (27C) by Thursday as a burst of hot air sweeps in from the Continent. The entire country will enjoy blue skies and sunshine in a long-awaited blaze of glory. Forecasters said the scorching conditions could hold out for a fortnight as high pressure dominates.

Disaster warnings issued as deadly floods hit Europe

AUTHORITIES across parts of central Europe have issued disaster warnings and scrambled to reinforce flood defenses after days of heavy rain cause lakes and rivers to burst their banks. Several people have already died or are missing in the floods that have swept across Germany, the Czech Republic and Switzerland since last week. Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas declared a state of emergency for most of the nation yesterday, as Prague's historic centre was threatened by severe flooding – forcing evacuations from low-lying areas.

SCORCHIN’ UK WILL BE HOTTER THAN GREECE THIS WEEK

BRITAIN will sizzle in temperatures hotter than Greece this week. The mercury will rocket from today, hitting 23C (73.4F) on Wednesday and 25C (77F) by the end of the week. And that will make us hotter than the usually scorching holiday island of Corfu, which is only expected to peak at 22C (71.6F).  Met Office forecaster Mark Seltzer said: “The working week looks good, with bright, sunny spells and dry weather for many areas. “A number of places will see temperatures into the 20s most days, with 21C to 23C in midweek, and Thursday and Friday could be warmer at 24C or 25C.†But it is bad news for the weekend, and the rest of the summer looks like it could be a washout. More rainfall than usual is expected, threatening Wimbledon, music festival Glastonbury and the school summer holidays. Mr Seltzer said rain would return as early as this weekend. And he added: “The following week may continue to see unsettled weather.â€

UK weather: It will be even hotter by the end of the week

This week could bring the hottest weather for nine months.

Forecasters said temperatures should hit 27C (80F) at the end of the week, easily beating the year’s high of 23.8C (75F) recorded on May 7. The heat is forecast to continue into Saturday although showers and unsettled weather could threaten parts of the country next week.

Brian Gaze, from The Weather Outlook, said: “Temperatures will rise and I’d not be surprised to see 27C by the weekend.†Met Office forecaster Dan Williams was slightly more cautious but still predicted “glorious sunshine†lasting into next week. “We expect 22C highs on Tuesday and Thursday, 24C or 25C on Friday, and temperatures could be higher if a place gets long hours of sunshine and low winds,†he said.

The South is expected to see the hottest temperatures, although it could reach 23C (73F) in the North and 21C (70F) in Scotland, as sunny spells are interspersed with cloud and showers. Meanwhile, the nation’s 16 million hay fever sufferers will be forced to contend with increasing pollen levels that could reach a 50-year high. Prof Roy Kennedy, director of the National Pollen and Aerobiology Research Unit, said tree and grass pollen levels would rapidly increase after being stunted by the cold spring.

TROPICAL STORM SET TO WASH OUT UK SUMMER

A tropical storm will wash out the short summer tonight as the sun vanishes for the month. Wind and rain from Hurricane Andrea, which has blitzed America, is heading our way. It comes after just one week of sun following the coldest spring in more than 50 years. Temperatures slumped to 13C in London and Newcastle yesterday. Met Office forecaster David Jackson said: “We did have a spell of weather which was warmer than average, but the ex-tropical storm, Andrea, will come across the Atlantic overnight on Monday and Tuesday and it’ll be a duller outlook.

“As we go through the week this will spread across much of the country.†But Brits were still enjoying the warm spell at Bournemouth beach and Langland Bay, Swansea yesterday and the sunshine boosted ticket sales for the Rockness Festival, Loch Ness.

Kind of relation to the 2 in the post above (daily star & express) but I am still yet to come across 1 single domestic tabloid that puts across something other than jibberish in a very low level of intelligent meaning?

The rest of the modern advanced world, (ok i`m mentioning N America as an example but many other countries media are as good) make technical matters come across much easier yet with very high professional detail.

I guess the massive majority of our own population simply don`t take the weather as serious as other places & populations do therefore this is reflected in our newspapers & other media?

Get ready for a typically damp British summer as forecasters warn jet stream plunge could lead to unsettled wet weather into August

Britain's fine weather looks set to be over for the foreseeable future as forecasters warn the unsettled and wet conditions could last until the end of July and into August.

The last two weeks of hot, clear days have been replaced by erratic conditions, including rain and high winds of up to 40mph, interspersed with pockets of warm, sunny and dry periods.

Forecasters have attributed the unpredictable stretch - which is being caused by a south shifting jet stream - to just another 'typical British summer'.

London weather: next week set to be a scorcher with highs of 30c

London looks set to bask in a mini heat wave as the mercury could reach up to 30c next week. The capital could cook as temperatures look set to soar to as high as 30c on Wednesday beating records for 96 years. Weather channel forecaster Leon Brown said: “The changeable and cool weather pattern from the west for Thursday to Saturday this week looks like it will change to a humid and brief much warmer spell early next week from the south. “We could see temperatures next Wednesday in the high 20s across much of central and southern England, with the hot spot in the London area 29 to 30C making it by far the hottest day of the year so far.â€

Meanwhile Met Office forecaster Emma Sharples also predicted blue skies for the capital. She said: “Towards the middle of the week London can expect long dry sunny spells following an unsettled weekend.†The soaring temperatures will see London enjoying the highest mid-june temperatures since 1917. But it isn’t all good news for sun worshippers as forecasters claim the hot spells could be cut short by thundery downpours. Mr Brown added: “However, it will also become thundery and flash floods and thunderstorms are also a high risk for Tuesday and Wednesday next week. “Depending on where they occur storms may hold down the temperatures to the mid-20s rather than the higher 20s.†Meteo Group forecaster Gareth Harvey said: “There may be some showers on Wednesday but in between there will also be some dry, sunny spells.â€
