On the 9th of October 1884, there was a short-lived Arctic northerly that brought the first snows of the season to parts

9th October 1884

Barnard Castle: Snow on the moors

Seathwaite: hills covered with snow

10th October 1884

Great Stanmore: snow

Wrotham: the first snows

Banbury: snow

Debtling: snow on hill

Winslow: first snows

Harewood Lodge: first snows

Llandovery: snow, sleet, hail and rain

Melrose: first snows, Eildon Hills white

11th October 1884

Ashburton: hills white with snow

Llandovery: snow a foot deep on Black Mountain

Orleton: Clee Hills covered with snow

In this sort of scenario the snow can briefly penetrate surprisingly far south if lighter winds and clearer skies there allow more overnight radiative cooling.
