Philippines Record 87 Earthquakes In The Month Of January

Did you know that a total of 87 earthquakes occurred in various parts of the country in January this year?

Most of them, however, were too weak to be felt, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

For the first three days of February, Phivolcs said 13 earthquakes have already been recorded.

The Philippine National Seismic Network has listed the event parameter (hypocenter, time and magnitude) with the intensity based on the Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale..............http://www.zambotimes.com/archives/42809-Phivolcs-records-87-tremors-in-January;-13-so-far-in-February.html

Seven Tremors Rattle Gujarat - India

At least seven low intensity tremors were reported in the state on Tuesday. Four occurred in Saurashtra, two in Kutch region and one near Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited's (SSNNL) dam in south Gujarat. There were no reports of any casualties or damage because of them, sources said.

Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) officials said a tremor of a magnitude measuring 1.3 on the Richter scale was reported at 30 km north-east from SSNNL dam in south Gujarat region at 11.30 am. They said the magnitude of a tremor experienced near Gondal in Rajkot district was 2.5 on the Richter scale.

Hawaii Scientists Monitor Earthquake Swarm Near Kilauea Volcano

48 small quakes and counting on the Big Island as of Wednesday morning

HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii: Scientists at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory are keeping an eye on a swarm of small earthquakes around the active Kilauea volcano.

In its morning status report, HVO wrote that there “is an ongoing seismic swarm just northwest of the summit.â€

From the Wednesday status report, updated at 7:29 HST:

A swarm of shallow earthquakes started after midnight last night about 5 km (3 mi) northwest of Halema`uma`u Crater that was ongoing as of this posting. Forty-eight earthquakes were strong enough to be located beneath Kilauea: 39 quakes within the swarm so far at a maximum rate of 6/hr (including a preliminary magnitude-3.4 quake at 6:56 am), two deep quakes beneath the southwest rift zone, two beneath the southeast summit caldera, one within the upper east rift zone, four on south flank faults. Seismic tremor levels were low and dropped slightly during deflation.

Most of the quakes have been in the magnitude 2.0 vicinity, but a few reached over 3.0.

Seismic activity on the rift zone is not rare, however this number of small earthquakes is high for the present eruptive activity.

Record Year For Oklahoma Earthquakes

Just Wednesday afternoon, a 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook the central Oklahoma town of Wellston. Experts tell us the state experienced more than 1,000 quakes last year, with tremors felt by more than 60,000 people across Oklahoma and surrounding states.

Seismologists saw a big jump in the number of earthquakes in Oklahoma last year. More than 1,000 quakes were recorded in 2011 -- ten times the average number of 100 a year.

Last year also produced the strongest quake in the state's history -- a 5.6 magnitude tremor in Lincoln County -- in November.

Oklahoma Geological Survey Seismologist, Austin Holland says it's uncommon to see the number of earthquakes jump so drastically...............http://www.kxii.com/...43.html?ref=543

Caribbean Plate Stress: Cuba And Jamaica Rattled By Tremors

The Earthquake Unit at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies says tremors from a magnitude 5.0 earthquake that occurred in Cuba this morning were felt in several parishes in Jamaica.

This is the second earthquake felt in Jamaica in consecutive days following the 3.4 magnitude quake recorded near Yallahs, St Thomas, yesterday.

A release from the unit says this morning’s earthquake occurred at 3:34 and was felt in Clarendon, St Catherine, St Mary and Kingston and St Andrew.

There are no reports of any damage or injuries.

The epicentre of the earthquake was in the Santiago de Cuba province.

Mild Quake Rocks Delhi

An earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale was felt in western Uttar Pradesh and parts of Delhi and the NCR on Tuesday.

The earthquake took place at around 3.37 am. No serious damage has been reported.

An official from the Meteorological Department (IMD) said it was a low intensity earthquake with the epicentre at Baghpat in western Uttar Pradesh.

This is fifth tremor experienced in Delhi since the beginning of this year. On March 5, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake had shaken Delhi and its adjoining areas in the NCR. Its epicentre was Bahadurgarh on the Haryana-Delhi border.

Tremors were felt on September 18 in 2011 too because of an earthquake with an intensity of 6.8 on the Richter Scale and its epicentre near the Sikkim-Nepal border.

Also, on September 8 in 2011, an earthquake of 4.2 magnitude on Richter Scale hit Delhi with Haryana's Sonepat as its epicentre.

The National Disaster Management Authority has planned a 10-day crash course on Rapid Visual Screening for over 300 engineers.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Delhi Development Authority will help in completing this course. After their training the engineers will assess whether or not buildings in Delhi can withstand quakes.

They will submit their reports recommending necessary action..............http://www.deccanherald.com/content/234056/mild-quake-rocks-delhi.html
