Got back from a week long field trip in Greece at the weekend. We stayed in Korfos on the south east coast of the mainland, to the south west of Athens. From here we explored different geological aspects of the landscape. We got to see some beautiful sights and a few of us stayed up drinking on the beach until sunrise on the last night, so managed to stay sober enough to get a few nice pics from there.

Here are a few I took including some from the plane on the way over. Not a particularly fancy camera, just the Panasonic DMC FT2.

Was the Corinth canal constructed in ancient times?

Quite an endeavour if so.

I think it was planned at various times in the last 3,000 years by different emperors or rulers, many of whom died or were poisoned/assassinated before work could begin. Nero was the first to get started but got in less than a km from either end before dying. I don't think it was finally finished until Greece got independence, so it was supposed to be a great feat for national pride. But due to it's narrowness, the unstable rock and nearby fault lines, it's pretty much been a failure and the majority of ships take the 700km trip around the south of Greece instead. Still, 'tis an interesting site.
