On the 10th of March 1901, many parts of southern Italy and Sicily reported red rain, alarming many people as it resembled blood. The red colour was due to Saharan dust and sand blown up into the atmosphere due to a sirocco wind.

It happened again 10 days later on the 20th of March this time affecting a greater area which included most of Italy and parts of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. Samples taken of the dust were found to be mainly consist of quartz and frustules of freshwater diatoms. It was believed the rate of dust fall for the 2nd incident as about 5.5 tons per square mile.
