its always known to first day of winter has always been 21st dec or after this year its 22nd december even i asked a weather presenter on twitter to settle an argument on when the first day of winter offically starts and he says its 21st december but as the seasons weathers are so messed up daffodils are out and still have wasps here

untrue, winter starts 1st Dec, possibly should be an earlier start date for scotland, I know Irelands 1st day of winter is 01 Nov

Astronomical.

Fine. But we're not astronomers. As TWS said a while ago - there is no "official" start of winter, and there never has been one. The most common CONVENTIONS are the two mentioned already- the astronomical equinox based definitions (21 December-20 March) and the meteorological definition (1 December-28/29 February).

Given that this is a weather site, and that nearly all weather-related statistics use 1 Dec, why on earth would we use the astronomical dates?

I don't. I use the meteorological start of 1st December.

I was simply just giving you the word you were looking for :p

The one on the M60? No idea, but if it normally gets closed for severe gales, then yes as tomorrow will be about as bad as it gets. However, there are plenty of alternative routes around it by the looks of it.
