A pretty cold start (coldest of the winter) though not much frost visible due to the drier than normal air. A breeze was blowing for much of the night too which made it more penetrating than a normal frost at this temperature, though it would have dropped far lower without the breeze. Clear and far less hazy than yesterday.

I think the thermometers on buildings are struggling with the cold air and brisk winds. Driving over the M4 elevated section at around 7.45 this, morning, the first thermometer reported -9oC. I chuckled quietly to myself thinking it was ridiculously low and probably around -4oC is reality. Then I crawled past the Lucozade thermometer (still there after all these years) and that reported -15oC. I don't think they will be accepted as official reporting stations any time soon. Having said that, neither would my car which was insistent that the temperature was no lower than -1oC for the entire journey from Reading.

A very nice graphic Jean, thanks. Just illustrates how the UK is protected from the real cold by the North Sea in this sort of airflow. I take it you are expecting an ice day in Paris today? I imagine it must feel very bitter on the continent this morning with temperatures well below zero and a keen easterly wind. Even Stuttgart which is quite far west in Germany is at -10C at the moment.

It is also the windchill which is noticeable here in Paris , for Orly Airport temps and windchill :

Sunny all day after a clear cold start, but little sign of frost because of the dry atmosphere. Feeling very cold in the wind but not quite as bitter as yesterday (althought the thermometer shows about a degree colder). Currently sunny, 1.4 deg C, wind moderate NE. Today's maximum 2.2, last night's minimum -2.9.
