The first tropical depression of the WEST PACIFIC season has formed in the south China Sea, midway between the Philippines and Vietnam. Although we haven't seen a February formation for a while in the West Pacific, it is not unheard of. 01W's LLC is broad, but convection is becoming more persistant. Intensity is 25kts currently, and only slight intensification to weak tropical storm status is expected as the depression moves northwestwards towards landfall in Vietnam.

It's all over before it started. JTWC issued their second, and last advisory last night. JMA still forecast 01W to become a tropical storm but I agree with JTWC, this system no longer meets the criteria for a tropical cyclone. The LLC is no longer identifiable and convection is not organised. Victim of shear this one!
