The visual sat picc and the latest temperatures show the situation today.

The sat picc has some holes in it but nowhere near as extensive as by mid morning yesterday. Temperatures are pretty much all below 10C, many 9C or below with the StSc sheet. Little chance of it breaking from above for many but those near the clearer edges, see the sat picc from Dundee (visual), for those most likely.

The fog was so dense at 21.00 last night that we couldn't see our neighbours' garages 20 metres away!!

It was still foggy at first light this morning and is still foggy, though less so, now.

Flat calm, 8.6c after 5.2c minimum.

After a cloudy morning a hole has developed in the cloud sheet right over the Peak District and it's currently clear and sunny.

Despite the sunshine it's much cooler than yesterday with the temperature standing at 8.8c.

yes the visual sat picc shows up the break quite nicely, reports show Woodford has SCT but Manchester shows BKN so its a pretty clear edge, your report ties in nicely; here the first glimmer of sun through the StSc sheet about 10 mins ago and the cloud shows movement from about W or WNW, so areas ESE of your area are probably best placed to get any breaks extending from the area over yourself.

looking more closely at the 00z Watnal, the cloud is about 1,000ft+ thick, so 11C is needed to start to break it in situ rather than the break which is showing over the Peak. This probably partly occurring through some overturning just below the inversion height aided by the topography.

Trying to forecast this sort of thing is hellish difficult. The broad brush treatment is the only way=mostly overcast at first but some breaks developing around lunchtime but areas of low cloud rather persistent in places!

Vague but about the most sensible way of dealing with it until breaks start to show then mesoscale use of wind profiles and observations will help get more accuracy.

Have to say I am not enjoying this current spell, I usually enjoy high pressure but not murky highs like this one. In all honesty anything would be an improvement, there's nothing more frustrating than believing you are going to get warm sunshine and then being greeted in the morning by low cloud and spending all day willing it burn off.

temperature is up to 10.3C and the cloud is now showing much better signs of breaking, whether that is the temperature inducing it or the clearer slot moving in I'm not sure.
