As per the Atlantic storm thread.

Depressions coming from about south rather than SW round to NW for some reason do seem to cause more headaches regarding both their track and depth than any other direction.

I have no idea why but would imagine a lot of work is being done at UK Met and ECMWF to try and solve this problem. The GFS USA side will be less bothered as it is effectively only a short wave feature and this detail is not important for the overall northern hemisphere model output, certainly not by the time any downstream effect from it is felt approaching the western fringes of the states.
