January 1997 had a CET of 2.5C and was the last below average CET winter month until January 2001, a depressing statistic for cold weather fans. The first 10 days were very cold with a CET of -0.6C. An overlooked fact about this month was just how dry it was for England and Wales, it was the 5th driest on record and the driest January since 1880.

Here are forecasts from this month

Good to see the footage from early January 1997. The first 10 days were notably very cold with many places recording a run of 'ice' days. Whilst it was very cold, there wasn't much snow about and the breakdown on the 10th was a bit of a damp squib from memory, bringing a couple of inches of wet snow at best which quickly thawed. It reminded me a little of what happened on the 27th Dec 2010. Much of central Europe hung onto the freezing conditions during the middle of the month, and central/eastern/southeastern parts saw some rather cold conditions return mid month, with alot of fog, I remember a couple of very foggy days mid month in Newcastle. The second half of the month saw predominantly mild atlantic weather but with a shortlived NW flow at some stage which brought a little more snow.

The start of Jan 97 was a mix between the starts to Jan 09 and 10, colder than Jan 09 but with similiar amounts of snow, less cold than Jan 10 or as long lasting and with much less snow than then. With two sub 3 degree months in Dec and Jan, winter 96/97 looked like it was going to be a notably cold one, alas Feb 97 was very mild indeed.
