January drier than the two preceeding months (though that wasn't difficult as they both were in the region of 150mm), but still wetter than average.

January: 95.2mm

2013 so far: 95.2mm

Only counted 44mm here which is way below average 77mm

That is partly explained by the snowy spell but the first half of the month was quite dry.

Snow often blows nearer to horizontal so is not caught by the rain gauge.

Once the bucket is full of snow no more can be held until some has thawed - which often did not occur for several days.

January is not an especially wet month here anyway, there are two peaks in the average monthly figures, centred on August and November

February to May is the driest period and there is a shorter dryish spell in September/October

Not usually a problem with a traditional Snowdon guage, just bring in the funnel and bottle and melt inside either by waiting or pouring in warm water (obviously deducting this amount!). If drifting or blowing out of the funnel is a problem, then estimate the level depth and press the up-turned funnel into that part of your garden, then likewise to melt, best you can do with snow!

67.8 mm here in February which is 84% of the 1981-2010 average. The second half of the month was very dry with just 2.7 mm recorded.

The total for the year so far ( to Feb' 28th ) is 160.2 mm compared to 149.7 mm at the same stage in 2012.

This month will come along at average which is odd considering it's a very cold month normally very cold months tend to be dry.
