New warning just issued

Issued at: 1251 on Sun 17 Mar 2013

Valid from: 0005 on Tue 19 Mar 2013

Valid to: 2359 on Tue 19 Mar 2013

During Tuesday an area of sleet and snow over Scotland will move south into parts of Northern England and Northern Ireland. Snowfall will be heaviest over hills, where 5 to 10 cm of snow seems likely and with around 15 cm or more across some upland areas. At lower levels accumulations will generally be less than 5 cm and east coastal areas are likely to see little lying snow. However over many upland areas, the snow will drift in the strong easterly winds, (gusting to 40 to 50 mph quite widely), bringing significant drifting over many hill routes. Icy stretches will add to the hazardous conditions. Conditions should start to ease from the north through the day, although the speed of this improvement is unclear. The public should be aware that some disruption to travel may well develop, and depending on subsequent information, this warning may be upgraded to Amber across parts of the region.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Snowfall will become increasingly prolonged and heavy in places across the north of the UK, as a very cold easterly air mass sourced from Scandinavia becomes re-established across all northern areas of Britain. Conditions look likely to become especially poor for some upland areas, with atrocious travel conditions due to the combination of snow and strong winds. Many areas bordering the coast, however, will see a more sleety mixture which will struggle to settle, at least on road surfaces.

Covers

Darlington, Durham, Gateshead & Northumberland

BBC Weather for the week ahead shows Tuesdays event for lower levels been on of Rain turning to snow so I can't see much settling at lower levels thankfully. Not much snow after Tuesday remaining cold highs around 4c at best (milder midlands south 5c to 8c) with the Atlantic pushing in to the south west by Friday and the winds shift to a South easterly direction

EDIT

Tuesdays snow warning has just been removed by the met office Mondays remains in place

with these new warnings that forecast is obviously gunna change now i suspect the county file forecast will be different

There's still loads of potential for low levels tomorrow evening and on Tuesday, then the easterly midweek looks pretty unstable too. Fingers crossed for one more significant snowfall event this winter!

The early hours of Tuesday look too marginal for low lying parts with dew points above freezing, but the cold air quickly undercuts again during the day.

The rain in Newcastle is just starting to turn sleet, so hopefully I'll be reporting snow soon. The 12z is an exceptional GFS run for the second half of March - wet snow or sleet tomorrow, then proper snow on Tuesday, maybe an easterly on Wednesday with snow showers, then a huge snowfall next weekend from an Atlantic low bumping into the cold air. Obviously next weekend is outside the reliable timeframe, but it is very unusual by this part of March for there to be no real mild weather on the horizon at all.

Hints again that the pesky northern blocking will start to erode as the month comes to an end mild and wet for Easter at this stage rather cold and snowy

Mild and wet or cold and snowy................... easy choice for me

Hopefully ECM will start to show it easing over the coming days

Is it really sensible to be looking at charts at +336 hrs though? When we know the charts at +96 are going to change drastically never mind that far ahead!

Maybe if we get loads of northern blocking now we won't get any of those cold misty easterlies in May this year.

Surely you would rather it was 0°C in March and 20°C in May rather than 10°C in both months - I'm a heat lover as well as a cold lover, its just that March/April are too early for real warmth generally so I'm just looking for cold at the moment.

Meanwhile its turning back to sleet here as the intensity eases off.

Best weather has to be a week of cold and snow, lots of accumulation, no school and work, and temperatures below 0c.

Saturday then sees temps hit 15c with sun and melts most of it (enough to mess around with).

Sunday then we see 25c, scorching sunshine, no snow, plenty of BBQ's and football to be had.

Then rinse and repeat.
