HOBART ( pop 210,000 ) is Tasmania's capital city, situated at sealevel and backed by a 1270m mountain range.

    April - Mid autumn

17 consecutive months of above average monthly temperature almost came to end this month and it was only due to rounding that made this the 18th month on the trot that was warmer than the corresponding monthly average of 1981-2010. After a settled first half with high pressure centres just to the west and to the south east, a modest cold change from the south west brought the first mountain snow for the year, settling to 800m. Two or three days followed that were mostly cloudy and rather cold, with onshore SSE winds. After this a big change in the weather pattern unfolded, with high pressure migrating to northern latitudes ( over northern NSW ) as intense low pressure, well to Tasmania's south, trekked a little closer. This left Tasmania in a broad westerly airstream which was very windy at times with occasional gales, with embedded fronts bringing rain to the west and just a shower or two to Hobart and the more shltered eastern side of the island.

    April 2013 Summary and Statistics

Another below average month in the series, April was a month of two halves, with the first being extremely cold for April, following on from March, the second half more reminiscent of an average April, but still below average as a whole. Again a significant cold record was broken, with the records for coldest April temperature on my records, and coldest date record on my records, also longest uninterrupted stretch of air frosts. One of the more notable things for April was a lack of 'April showers', with the month coming in with a fairly rare 1.5mm.. this is also a broken record on my records, but not in the general area. The only thing that saved it from being an exceptional month overall was the high incidence of above average maxima in the second half of the month.

Below are the statistics for my weather station during the month of April

    Mean Maximum: 12.8C
    Mean Minimum: 3.3C
    Overall Mean: 8.05C

    Monthly Rainfall total: 1.5mm

    Total Snowfall: 0cm

Lowest daily maximum temperature: 6.6C (11th April)
Highest daily minimum temperature: 12.0C (14th April)
Lowest daily minimum temperature: -4.1C (2nd April)*

    Days with Ground Frost: 14
    Days with Air Frost: 7*
    Days of falling snow: 0
    Days of lying snow: 0
    Thunder days: 1

    Temperature frequency breakdown

    Maximum temperature:
    5.0C to 9.9C: 4 days
    10.0C to 14.9C: 19 days
    15.0C to 19.9C: 7 days

    Minimum temperature:
    -5.0C to -0.1C: 7 days
    0.0C to 4.9C: 13 days
    5.0C to 9.9C: 8 days
    10.0C to 14.9C: 2 days

Compared to the Colwyn Bay average (81-10 average = 8.7), my average comes in at 0.65C below the Colwyn Bay average, making it a slightly below average month

My statistics for central Reading in April 2013:

    Average maximum: 13.3
    Average minimum: 4.1
    Average for month: 8.7

    Highest maximum: 21.7 (April 25)
    Lowest maximum: 4.9 (4)
    Highest minimum: 11.8 (14)
    Lowest minimum: -3.5 (7)

    Air frosts: 5

Rainfall (estimate from Reading University data): 45mm, close to the long-term average.
Sunshine (estimate from Reading University data): 185 hours, around 120% of average.

    Days with snow falling: 1
    Days with snow lying: 0

Very much a month of two halves, with a very cold start (feeling particularly cold in the nagging easterly wind) but temperatures recovering well in the second half of the month, so the month as a whole was only fractionally colder than the long-term mean.  Rainfall was near average, but the month seemed dry because most of it fell overnight during the second week.  After a pleasantly warm and sunny spell in the third week, the month ended on a cooler and more showery theme.

    ** Lowest since 2005

A dry and sunny April with close to average temperatures. The month was the third coolest of the last 20 years, third driest of the last 30 years and the third sunniest of the last decade. The final mean temperature masked an abrupt changearound mid-month.

The first 12 days saw a mean of just 4.8°C with frequent easterly winds, compared to a mean of 10.5°C for the remainder of the month. The maximum temperature of 5.7°C on the 8th was the lowest since 1996. The 7th was the first day with a temperature in double-figures since 30th January. Just a week later on the 14th it reached 20.2°C, making it the third earliest date to reach 20°C in 34 years. The 17th and 18th were very windy, with a maximum gust of 42mph on the latter day, before a brief clear and settled spell on the 20th. The final 10 days were then mainly westerly and changable, though rainfall amounts were still very low.

Overall an interesting month due to the abrupt changearound mid-month, but disappointing in that it had no snow, fog or thunder.
