Some moderately heavy rain in the last half an hour. Greying up but no thunder or lightning yet. Expect that the round of storms currently south of London will be the best chance of the week for some beefier stuff later. Sure are moving through quickly though

Well that storm has just rolled on through. 4 lightning strikes, 3cg and 1ic, plus 4 loud rumbles.  And while typing the back end of it just produced another cg and thunder  :D

Feel cheated as I only got about 4 hours sleep and got woken to hear only 5 or 6 decent rumbles of thunder about 90 minutes ago :(

Same here a few miles to your east. Looking at the radar it shows a few lightning strikes around the M25, so one of those 'a few miles make all the difference' situations.

Morning all

Very dark and damp here, some light rain in the early hours by the looks of things, not heard anything of note, got my lie in instead :)

Looks like the first wave was just a bit of light rain here, but it has come on to rain a bit heavier now but nothing major, very mild and muggy though. 17.4oC in the shed.

maybe it will be the second wave that holds the storms?

very poor forecasting by the met office, yet again!

their forecast issued at 4am warns of ''frequent lightning in places''

thank heavens we don't live in a country where lives depend on accurate forecasting.....really poor effort!

we get more thunderstorms from cold fronts/squalls passing through in winter nowadays than we get in summer.

You just nailed it there with your comment "frequent lightning in places", well there was frequent lightning in places, one was here and currently "in places" tracking northwards into Suffolk.

The forecasting wasn't poor, it's the nature of the beast I'm afraid.

By the way, can you stick your location in your profile please, it helps to know where you are in situations such as we have today,

you could head out and just as likely get something right at home, hard to call as youy need to watch the radar and see where the action trends appear, if you heads your way then by all means take it, not an easy call I am afraid, sorry.

Just posted in the convective thread - it's really early to be throwing in the towel! It's only 11am, if we get some sun through and the heating gets going, then we could end up with another batch later this afternoon.

I think to expect a 12 hour country/region wide MCS from 9am onwards was a bit of a tall order..... ;) - even if the media hyped it up beyond belief.

Really fabulous skies this morning from the line of (apparently) active storms to my west, however not so much as an ever so quiet rumble - despite the radar trying to convince me otherwise!

We missed that first line of cells which developed around sunrise - it weakened according to NW radar.  We did hear a few distant rumbles to our east just after 10 a.m. from the second batch, and I'm now following the stuff on radar to our south-west.
