After a lull of a month and a half (besides Tropical Storm Mitag south of Japan earlier this week, which really was blink and you'll miss it), the Western Pacific has re-awoken with the formation of Tropical Storm Hagibis, located southeast of Hong Kong, China. Hagibis is a large, sprawling storm with large rainbands flanking the consolidating LLCC. Winds are at 35kts. The storm is in an area of low shear and over warm water, so some intensification is expected, however, this will be limited by the fact that Hagibis only has about 24hrs over water before landfall east of Hong Kong. Primary concern here is some very large rainfall totals in southeastern China and Taiwan.

Hagibis strengthened to 45kts, but has since weakened to 40kts on approach to the coast. The LLCC is exposed, but there remains some deep convection in it's vicinity. Hagibis is very near landfall, and will likely dissipate overland, despite a northeastward bend in track over the next couple days.

Hagibis degenerated into a remnant low over China, but has regenerated into a tropical storm to the south of Japan. Hagibis' second life will most likely be quite brief however, as the system is racing eastwards towards cooler waters and higher shear, initiating extratropical transition.
