Probably a bit late in the year for the storm aspect but I've been working on an app idea for 'crowdcasting' weather - and it's almost finished!

I just have to see if Apple will accept it and it will be available for people to try.

I didn't spend too long on it but it's pretty comprehensive so far.

In a nutshell it takes forecasts from anyone who wants to submit - and combines them to show likeliest areas for that particular weather based on the forecasts submitted.

The theory is that if more submissions are from people 'in the know' or at least people trying to be serious - the forecast should at least be vaguely reliable. However, if a large proportion of the submissions are 'serious' submissions then potentially it could be a good way for people like me to understand the risk in my area :-)

Anyway I will post more details soon...

Apple? Well something I would have been interested in has ruled me out.

Don't fret - I have an Android developer friend who *may* be able to help me port it.The other possibility is a mobile web version.Watch this space for developments... :-)

I use an Android tablet but a mobile web version would be good too, due to using windows phone 8.1. So that would be better when I'm mobile. :)

Have some screenshots of the finished project and just waiting for Apple to verify and accept it into the store.

The app lets you add storm, wind and snow forecasts currently but I can add others if it becomes necessary.

Hopefully will be tested and available on the App Store by the end of this week - here is a description of the app:

"Aloft is a community weather forecasting project which lets anyone add their forecast to the system for specific areas on specific days.

This system is known as Crowdcasting.

The app lets you add a forecast up to three days ahead. There is no need to register or log-in and it's simple and quick to use.

Make your forecast by highlighting the map where you forecast the particular weather to occur. The app then blends all the available forecasts together to produce the result, which highlights the areas of most significance - namely the areas which the forecasts all - or mostly - agree upon.

The app lets you add forecasts for electrical storms, high winds and snow. Over time this may be widened to cover flooding risk and other extreme weather phenomenon.

It must be noted that these forecasts can only be as reliable as those who submit them. The crowdcasting system is an experimental one, and we are aware of the flaws. However, we have several potential ways around these limitations, and will be implementing these in due course.

For the time being - enjoy the app and we hope you find it a useful tool for your forecasting and weather-watching purposes.

Thank you for looking/trying the app -

The Aloft Team"

I'll have to wait for the web version unless you have some love for Windows Phone and Android?!

Just installed it, terrible. Ads at the bottom of the screen so you can't see southern England.

Need to do some work on it. Maybe I'll remove the ads - probably don't need the annual 46 pence revenue anyway... ;-)

I'd say it needs to be made more user friendly. The buttons can be easily pressed. I accidentally submitted a forecast the other day. Maybe some instructions too. I like the idea of it though!

I saw that forecast and got quite excited - I think you put a storm risk all over london :-P
