Lampeter, Ceredigion, Wales

Very mild but quite wet and rather cloudy

After the exceptionally dry weather of September normal service was resumed for October. Much of the rain fell in the first 17 days with just 32mm in the last fortnight. The month was very mild, with the second half, unusually for October, being marginally warmer than the first. The most notable aspect of the month was the exceptional warmth on the 31st, both minimum and maximum being the highest recorded for so late on in the year. Estimated sunshine at 72 hours was some 20 hours below average.

1st – 3rd: Dry and rather warm with some sun. Septembers fine spell did at least last into the first few days, however the night of 1st saw a slight air frost – the first of the Season.

4th – 10th: Showers and longer spells of rain, some very heavy, sunny spells between. 8th/ 9th was exceptionally thundery, frequent storms and torrential downpours giving a total fall of 31.6mm. Temperatures rather cool to average and sometimes windy.

11th – 14th: Mostly dry, a little light rain sometimes, sunny intervals. Temperatures rather cool to average with a touch of frost night of 11th

15th – 17th: Very wet spell, downpours especially prevalent during 16th with 13mm in one hour and a daily total 31.9mm, this was a mostly cloudy spell but a mild one

18th – 19th: Very mild and mostly dry just the odd shower. Exceptionally mild night of 17th gave a minimum of 15.0c 18th – the highest I have recorded this far into October. Quite a windy couple of days with a few sunny intervals.

20th – 26th: Mostly cloudy with some rain or showers at times, but mostly small in quantities. Temperatures average to mild.

27th – 31st: Very mild with the months final day being exceptionally warm. A little rain or drizzle but with plenty of dry weather. Minimum on 31st of 14.9c the highest recorded so far into Autumn, while the maximum reached 19.4c - the highest reading of the month and also the warmest I have recorded so late on in the year here!

Yet another vile exceptionally dull and wet month dominated by South and South Easterly winds. 7th month out of 11 with below average sunshine and the first October since 1933 when no day managed 7 hours sun. Dullest September/October combination since 1992 and 2nd dullest since 1977.

As usual nowadays there was a much reduced diurnal range and a lack of extremes with 24/31 days having a max between 10.5C and 14.5C. No temperatures of note with the maximum lower than what many notably cold Octobers like 1992 managed to achieve.

Mean Max: 12.9C (+0.9)

Mean Min: 7.7C (+1.7)

Highest: 17.3C (18th)

Lowest Max: 9.6C (21st)

Highest Min: 12.2C (1st, 18th)

Lowest Min: 1.8C (29th)

Rainfall: 133.8mm (162%)

Wettest Day: 37.2mm (7th)

Rain Days: 16

Wet Days: 14

Sunshine: 72.6 hours (70%)

Sunniest Day: 6.9 hours (29th)

Sunless days: 6

You really hate those southereasterlies! Been dull here, almost zero sun for some 10 days until one bright showery day before the tropical maritime gurk has moved in once more.

Pretty mundane October for the most part, though in my view sunnier than average and a little warmer than average. Then the final week truly blew October out of the park, 4 out of the 5 working days this week saw 20C reached, a temperature which is rare to see once, let alone in 4 out of 5 days. Monday, Tuesday and Friday were near enough sunny from dawn till dusk. So in my view it is an 8/10 for me. October is one of my least favourite months so at first it did nothing spectacular but then the final week really hit the spot for me.

So far Autumn is going to plan, my dislike of wet and windy weather has been appeased nicely and makes up for the 6 months of Autumn last year.

November looks like the October pattern except for the pattern shifting several hundred miles west, so unsettled with average temperatures looks likely. At some point though winter cold will descend to the mid latitudes given the current polar profile. Question is where will it head.

October - Second month of spring - Hobart, Tasmania

After a record warm September temperatures were much closer to average but the warm trend continues, this being the 11th month in a row warmer than the 1981-2010 period.

Average daily maximum:  18.1 ( +0.8 )

Average daily minimum:  8.6 ( +0.3 )

Rainfall: 50mm ( average 62mm )

Rain days (+1mm ): 8/from 13

High pressure was centered much further south than usual extending across Tasmania ensuring more settled weather than is typical for mid spring. Weak fronts brought brief periods of light showers or drizzle as winds tended cool onshore S-SE, but it was a month notable for temperature contrasts from one day to the next - high pressure quickly moving to the east swinging winds warm northerly off the continent for a single day, before the next front repeated the cycle. The final few days of the month saw a weather change to a more typical westerly stream for spring, with a vigorous front crossing on the night of the 27th. 15mm fell in the initial rain band ( the highest monthly total ) followed by 6mm during the day in cold squally showers. These showers fell as snow around the mountain, settling near 700m.

Extremes in daily temperature for October ( Records since 1882 ):

Highest daily maximum:  25.6...22nd ( Record 34.6 in 1987 )

Lowest daily maximum:  12.2...13th ( Record 6.0 in 1958 )

Highest daily minimum:  12.5...19th ( Record 20.2 in 1933 )

Lowest daily minimum:  3.3...17th ( Record 0.0 in 1889 )

My statistics for central Reading in October 2014:

Average maximum: 16.5
Average minimum: 11.0
Average for month: 13.7

Highest maximum: 21.8 (31 October)
Lowest maximum: 12.7 (6 & 14)
Highest minimum: 16.5 (16)
Lowest minimum: 3.1 (5)

Rainfall: no data available for this site; local stations show around 60-70mm for the month, which is close to average.
Sunshine: no data available for this site.

Thunder heard on 1 day.

No air frosts or winter precipitation.

A very mild Atlantic dominated month.  The most notable thing was that the highest temperature was right at the end of the month - the maximum on 31 October was 21.8 deg C, certainly the highest temperature recorded that late in the year at this location.  Reading University recorded 22.1 on the same day.
