Rhino poaching and the economics of extinction

Hundreds of illegal hunters of the rhinoceros in South Africa’s Kruger national park have been shot dead by rangers in the past five years, but the temptation of a rich reward to end an impoverished life in Mozambique keeps them coming

Its quite a conundrum on how to deal with these people, on one hand they should feel the full weight of the law and on another the countries involved seem to turn a blind eye due to the revenue this despicable act brings.

The Chinese and their obsession with rhino horns is fuelling this industry. Perhaps they might take a different view if hunters turned up in their country killing pandas.
