June 2016 was a dull but mild month here. Thunderstorms, especially on the 7th meant June was the wettest month of the year so far. 20°C was reached on 21 days while it failed to reach 15°C on 3 very cool days at the beginning of the month.

June 2016 - Hobart, Tasmania

A mild and wet start to winter. This was the second month in a row to more than double the monthly rainfall average, but it comes on the back of 8 drier than average months in a row ( Sep-Apr ), which is very rare. This was the 10th month in a row to be warmer than average ( 1981-2010 ).

Three nights at the start of the month were amongst the warmest ever recorded for June. The readings have not been rounded, the full degree readings are coincidental, and no other June has had two readings in the top 10.

After a sunny start with frost a significant rain depression developed off the NSW coast from the 4th. This brought an unusually moist, mild subtropical airstream to Tasmania for a number of days heightened by record sea surface temperatures over the Tasman Sea. Northern Tasmania experienced major flooding, but Hobart in the south east had more moderate and intermittent falls but enough to easily eclipse the monthly average over a four day period. June is not a normally a month noted for significant wintry outbreaks, so this month snow settling on the mountain range behind the city occurred just twice, on the 11th ( to 400m ) and 24th ( 600m ). Both changes were quick to clear with no stable cold air following, and were preceeded by reasonable rainfall totals then  scattered showers.
