There will be a penumbral lunar eclipse visible overnight of 10th/11th February 2017 from the UK. A penumbral lunar eclipse is when at least some part of the moon passes through the partial shadow cast by the Earth when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon but no part of the moon passes through the total shadow cast by the Earth.

They are not spectacular, penumbral lunar eclipses and a lot go by unnoticed but with this one, almost the whole of the Moon will be within the penumbral shadow, so there should be a detectable dip in the brightness of the full Moon at maximum eclipse. in fact the far northern hemisphere should be darker than the far southern half.

It starts at 10.34pm and ends at 2.53am with maximum eclipse at 12.43am Saturday morning
