Recall my physic lecturer telling us about his work concerning the oscillation of the magnetic north. One of the ways he used to see where past magnetic north alignments were was to analyse ancient fire beds. The frequently used fire places had fixed a magnetic signature in the iron debris in the fire bed.

Also the magnetic north may flip as it has in the past.
