Loch Ness monster sightings: a giant eel?

Are some of the sightings of Nessie  due to giant eels present in the Loch?

Me and my dad went on a fishing trip to Fort William in July 2009 just downstream of Loch Ness, whilst fishing one of the local fisherman stopped for a chat and said that he had recently seen something very large not far from his boat just the week before we were there and he had been fishing those waters for years having seen nothing of that size before. I would be surprised if it was an eel even a big one as they are unlikely to be spotted at the surface and wouldn't get to the "monster " size(s) reported to have been spotted.
