For some years past explorations of the upper air by means of kites and balloons, which carry up meteorological instruments for recording temperature, humidity, and barometric pressures, have been made independently by various investigators in England, America, and France. It has now been resolved to co-ordinate these experiments and send up kites and balloons with recording instruments under the direction of the Meteorological Offices, Societies, and Bureaus of the United States, Great Britain, France, Austria and Germany, so as to secure synchronised and properly related observations of air currents, temperatures, etc., over a great part of the northern hemisphere. Our photographs show the English investigators at work at Petersfield, in Hampshire.
