It happened at midnight / 1am which must have been terrifying but there were sirens.

Insane pictures/footage - must have been absolutely terrifying for those people.
Tornadoes are a thing of beauty when they are moving across open fields with no houses/people/animals nearby - However, going through a hugely populated area like this in the early hours of the morning is the stuff of nightmares.

Looks like a strong EF3 or even EF4 from that damage @Kirkcaldy Weather

Sad news indeed and to think the people who live in Tornado Alley/Southeastern states still have the peak months to come. (April/May)

Hopefully no more casualties during tornado season over there.

Tornadoes are quite common in the Southeastern states/Gulf coast in January, February and March.
Such states as Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Kentucky see one or two.

April/May is more Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. (Others as well - Missouri for example)

So a long way to go over the coming months.

@karyo there was actually a tornado outbreak on this very day last year.

Looks to be some quite substantial buildings that are just rubble ... maybe stronger than EF3 on the scale?

I read on twitter some 2 hours ago that there was another Tornado on the ground with radar-confirmed debris close to Maplesville Alabama, no word on any injuries from that one although by the track it looks to have missed the town shortly before crossing US 82 North.

Tennessee emergency management agency spokeswoman raises tornado death toll to 19 and over 200 injured. Extensive damage along a estimated 50-mile path with many small towns and outlets yet to be accessible.

Seeing a few people saying the Cookeville tornado could be an EF5

Seeing some debate on how well the houses were anchored, I think they will say at least an EF4 but we will see once they do the survey. And sadly still many people missing in Cookeville.

I would expect that to be upgraded once they get to the worst of the damage
