This was a famous incident that was widely across parts the northern hemisphere during the last week of September 1950. The Sun and the Moon taken on an unusual colour ranging from steely grey to deep blue, royal blue or purple. The cause was smoke from forest fires around the Chinchaga river, Alberta, Canada on the 23rd September. The smoke reached eastern Canada and NE USA by the 24th and was so thick that it darkened the skies so much that artificial lighting had to be used during the day.

Transatlantic pilots reported seeing a strange brown/blue haze at around 30,000 ft with a smell of burnt paper, this smoke haze reaching the British Isles on the 26th and the effect lasted until about the 30th

The most recent event that was similiar to this was the "hurricane sun" of  mid October 2017 although it was a very short event of only a few hours, it was more dramatic than the Blue Sun/Moon of September 1950.
