How lovely .. a true Meteor...

A fireball seen over many parts of the northern UK has been confirmed as a meteor after a day of confusion about its identity.

The fireball was visible above northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland as it blazed across the clear night sky just after 10pm on Wednesday night.

It travelled 300km above Wales, the Irish Sea and Belfast before crashing into the Atlantic near Islay, according to new calculations by the UK Meteor Network.

The network’s initial calculation suggested it was space junk that could have come from Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite programme. But it withdrew that theory after collecting more data.

John Maclean, an astronomer at the network, said: “We’ve analysed it from many more angles. It is definitely a meteor. Probably a small piece of an asteroid that’s broken off an asteroid. It came in at an asteroidal orbit.”

NASA Strikes Asteroid in Key Test of Planetary Defense

NASA's DART spaceship on Monday struck the asteroid Dimorphos in a historic test of humanity's ability to prevent a cosmic object from devastating life on Earth. The 530-foot (160-meter) asteroid Dimorphos - roughly comparable to an Egyptian pyramid - which orbits a big brother called Didymos, first appeared as a speck of light around an hour before the collision. Its bread bun shape and rocky surface finally came into clear view in the last few minutes as DART raced toward it at roughly 14,500 miles (23,500 kilometers) per hour.

Smacked Asteroid's Debris Trail more than 6,000 Miles Long

The asteroid that got smacked by a NASA spacecraft is now being trailed by thousands of miles of debris from the impact. The image shows an expanding, comet-like tail more than 6,000 miles (10,000 kilometers) long, consisting of dust and other material spewed from the impact crater. This plume is accelerating away from the harmless asteroid, in large part, because of pressure on it from solar radiation. Scientists expect the tail to get even longer and disperse even more, becoming so tenuous at one point that it's undetectable.

Yes this is a positive..

I love meteorites!  Especially the larger iron ones as sometimes they have components inside of them but very very rarely and usually the government or scientists are first on the scene so i cannot get anywhere near them before they are salvaged 🤦‍♀️

Russia to launch mission to rescue stranded ISS crew after meteoroid strike Space agency mounts rescue mission to bring home two cosmonauts and US astronaut marooned on ISS.  Russia to Launch Mission to Rescue Stranded ISS Crew after Meteoroid Strike January 11, 2023

Space agency mounts rescue mission to bring home two cosmonauts and US astronaut marooned on ISS

russia-to-launch-rescue-ship-to-space-station-after-meteoroid-hit Moscow will launch a rescue vessel to the International Space Station next month to bring home three crew members who are in effect stuck in orbit after their original capsule was hit by a meteoroid. The docked Soyuz MS-22 sprang a major leak last month, spraying radiator coolant into space and prompting a pair of cosmonauts to abort a planned spacewalk. While Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, said the strike caused no immediate threat to the crew of the space station, it raised concerns about whether everyone on the orbital outpost could return to Earth in an emergency situation.

Once again the world is reminded that the Astronauts and Cosmonauts that reside on the ISS are in harm’s way. This time it is due to the Soyuz rescue capsule leaking coolant. In 2018 the Soyuz rescue capsule suffered a drill hole, sabotage done by distraught Russians wanting their friend brought back to Earth. In 2016 multiple ISS problems were in the news, including a chipped window. Rumors that the ISS was in trouble and about to be evacuated have been in the news..

We predicted in 2013 that the ISS would eventually be evacuated and put on automatic robotic control..

Why is there so much debris in the skies lately? Especially at a time when bolides are on the increase and red dust is everywhere. Thus to avoid these questions, the ISS may be evacuated during a time of great distractions,
