I would hazard a guess that the safety measures in-place is due to static current around Helicopter rotorblades, as colder-polar air tends to lack moisture which would otherwise carry the static along with the helicopter - as opposed to being dispersed naturally when the moisture content is higher. Any surface contact the Helicopter has in these 'drier' environments either directly or indirectly (say via sea-spray) would carry the static current down to the ground and pose the obvious risks to Oil Platforms & Workers on the deck.

"Triggered lightning" has left staff unable to leave platforms near Denmark since November.
