A huge 230ft-long crack in a cliff on Britain's Jurassic Coast has emerged and is on the verge of collapse.

The 60ft-wide section of the 600ft-cliff at Seatown, Dorset, has sunk by 3ft and is in the process of splitting away from the mainland.

A sinkhole at the back of a house in Thorpe Hamlet has swallowed a tree and is starting to affect the houses near it. It was first spotted Jan 24, and has been growing since.

The resident, whose house backs onto the sinkhole, said, “It feels like the back of our house is sinking into this hole. It started off relatively small but now it's around 7ft deep and 15ft wide.

Janet Evans, 60, who works in dam safety for utilities firm Welsh Water saw the hole while walking her dog and estimated the hole was '30 feet wide by six to 10 feet deep.'

She said:

'This is rather unusual because there is no water source up there.. I looked over the brambles and lo and behold, there was a sinkhole.

'Judging by the look of the soil, it happened overnight. Part of my training is in soil erosion, where we learn about how the water can creep through the earth and cause erosion, so I knew what it was when I saw it.

'This wasn't just a pothole, this was a gigantic crater.'

A red vehicle has fallen into a huge pothole on a pavement on the side of a small highway in Coventry early on Monday morning. A police cordon is in place and drivers are advised to avoid the area.

On Friday, July 28, Eastbourne Coastguard took to social media to post pictures and warn residents about the sinkholes on the beach by Sovereign Harbour.

A spokesperson said: “This is a safety message for the public, especially those who wish to or have visited this beach. We are currently trying [to] arrange for some sinkholes that are forming to be dealt with. We urge all members of the public to please stay away from this area to avoid any injury or further holes forming..”

A 'sinkhole' had also appeared in Seaside Rd by the Royal Hippodrome Theatre over the weekend of July 23-24. The road is partially blocked dt the hole, and the hole has been cordoned off.

Probably related to the earthquake as so close together
