From @MeteoGib "a summary of yesterday's heat, Thursday 27th April, and a historic day which saw Spain, Portugal and Morocco all beat their April temperature records - also the 38.8C achieved at Cordoba Airport was a new European record for April! The new Portugal record was 36.9C at Mora and with 41.3C at Marrakech & Ben Guerir the new Moroccan April record.

Hourly obs. only show 35C but article on IPMA site. (thro Google translate)

"Until 5 pm on the 27th, new records for the maximum air temperature were set for the month of April: In 61% of the stations, the extreme values of maximum air temperature were exceeded; 45% of the stations registered new extremes of maximum air temperature, on the 27th; In 11 stations the records reached on the 26th were surpassed today on the 27th. It should be noted that the extreme maximum value for the month of April, 36ºC in Pinhão recorded in 1945, was exceeded on the 27th in 6 stations: 36.9°C, Mora;    36.7 °C, Yellowish; 36.5 °C Neves Corvo; 36.3 °C, Alcácer do Sal; 36.2°C, Alvalade/Sado; 36.1°C, Portel." MADEIRA Provisionally 38.7C in the capital, Funchal on Tues 27th, which is the highest recorded temperature for Funchal. The Madeira record is 39.0 in August 1976 so this really was extreme heat for the island.

Madeira has a red heat warning for Tuesday 27th with very high, even extreme UV. These extreme temperatures occurred to the lee of high ground, in a NE/E wind, with a drying Foehn effect (over the mountains inland) combined with hot air from NW Africa.

Inland SE Portugal passed 40C. Smoke from Canadian wildfires is reaching the northeast of Iberia and Saharan dust is reaching the Algarve and south coast of mainland Spain.  Temperatures continue to tip into the low 40sC this week (moreso in Spain) with heat and storm warnings from AEMET and IPMA.

I'm in Portugal visiting family, just south of the Douro in Porto. We've had some terrific sunsets the last few days, there's a constant haze in the sky and it's very warm.

Incredible how just 3 weeks ago some of the higher elevated stations obliterated 24 hours rainfall records. A month of harsh contrasts for the island.
