Mid July 1973 was grim for  central parts of the UK  with prolonged heavy rain causing floods caused by a slow moving pressure.  1973 is not a year that you associated with wet weather and floods. It was a very dry year overall for England and Wales.

Manchester recorded around 73mm over 16th and 17th July 1973

Yes, Philip Eden commented on widespread and disastrous flooding affecting S Yorkshire, N Derbyshire, E Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Sheffield. On the 15th, 26 rainfall stations / 2240 sq km recorded over 100mm of rain, with 137mm at Rivelin, 134mm at Derwent and 119mm at Sheffield. We were unaffected by this in Surrey and, perhaps more surprisingly, I was unaffected by the unexpected and very localised cloudburst at Hook near Surbiton in Surrey on 6th July 1973 where 4.65ins of rain was recorded at Chessington.
