Philip Eden doesn't mention Eastbourne or Guildford, but he does record an 'exceptionally thundery' summer, with frequent hail and a good deal of local flooding'. Rainfall totals included 53mm at Houghton Regis near Dunstable on 6th May, and 112mm at St Alban's and 102mm at Nuneaton on the 21st June.
