With September 2023 ending up as being the joint warmest with September 2006, it got me thinking about other years where we have had a cool end to August only for it to turn warm just in time for the schools to go back.

Here's a few that come to mind for me:

2006 - August overall was on the poor side, including the last few days. September saw an improvement with temps widely in the mid 20s around the time schools went back.

1999 - The last few days of August were in the late teens or early 20s, followed by temps widely in the mid 20s during the first week of September.

2003 - Despite the UK's hottest summer's day on record (at the time) occurring that month, the closing days of August were rather cool with temps in the mid to late teens. The warmth continued during September though, all the way up to the equinox.
