January 1898: Very mild but mostly dry in south.

January 1898  was very mild with the January recording a CET of 6.6 It was a pretty dry January for England and Wales and in the far south it was very dry.

High pressure to the south and low pressure to the north was the pattern for this month

Some reports from this month

Tenterden: No snow, 2 air frosts, no sunshine on 15 days. Mean max: 46.6F, 9 days above 50F
Kensington: Extremely warm and dry
Bournemouth: Temp above 50F on 12 days
Lewes: No rain fell from 6th to 30th
Abingdon: Dry and mild, no frost and very little sun
Southport: Only one air frost and sea remarkably warm
Elswick Lodge: Rhododendrons, both crimson and white open their blooms perfectly.
Hartley Wintney: Remarkable for abnormal mildness, dryness and lack of rough weather. So mild was the month that the early spring flowers were in full bloom.
Addington: The temp rose above 50F on 10 days, no snow. Vegetation in a very advanced state
Norwich: Mean temp 43.1F, max above 55F on 4 days, virtually no rain from 5th to 29th
Manchester: Mean temp 43.4F, no snow and only 4 slight frosts
Haverfordwest: Primroses and spring flowers in bloom
Brampton: Very mild, grass never stopped growing
Hurdlestown: Very fine and mild and no cold, more like May than January.
Cargen: mean temp 44.5F, max temp exceeded 50F on 14 days
Moniaive: Fine and mild with many beautiful springlike days and frost on one morning
Loch Shiel: mean temp 44.3F
Edinburgh: mean temp 44.6F, no snow and no temp below 32F
Dublin: mean temp 47.8F, exceeded 50F on 21 days,  no snow.
Cork: mean temp 45.8F
Belfast: Remarkably fine and open; more like April than January. Cattle grazing most of the month.
