14.88mm of rain in 6 hours... Obligatory 'if only it was snow!' A streamer of sorts containing moderate-heavy rain has parked itself over a swathe of east Sussex, being driven in from the E/ENE. Will probably pick up another 10-20mm by 06:00 tomorrow.

At least four trees down around here overnight because of the wind, including over the branch line (no pun intended).

The wind woke me up in the night, it was that loud.

At last the rain is giving up for a bit, a really wild night strong N.E. Wind now. Had a lot of drifting rain in the night. Surely March will be drier.

I work outside doing landscaping and I have to say since October I've never known so many calls about ground movement (subsidence) in the garden, especially those with a slope etc

Usually it would just be general calls about a brick wall collapse or a fence blown down....shows how saturated the ground is.

Also noticeable how much moss is laying between roof tiles.

Its still February (just) but we seem to be getting a combination of March winds and April showers here  - the bright bits in between would be nice if it was a bit warmer - mind you the weather on earth could be the least of our problems AR3590 is now around 60% of the size of the sunspot that caused the legendary carrington event in 1859 … meanwhile I’ve baked cookies 🍪

Strong NE winds for most of the day, more flooding St Leonards/Hastings, cars being stopped and sent back.

People have been evacuated from their houses in St Leonards because of the flooding.

Yes, the Bexhill Road and Bulverhythe area were particularly bad, I was on the bus and it had to divert.

First visit to London today in probably 7-8 years at least, mainly to the Hyde Park and Tower Bridge areas. Apart from the chilly and strong north easterly breeze, it was a decent day with sunny spells, and stayed fully dry in comparison to back home where there looks to have been a shower mid afternoon.

A few of my favourite captures:

Quite a lot of standing water in places in the park to note!

Tower Bridge area, love the contrast between the older and new built architecture:

For the fellow Bexhill residents, take care on the beach. There are three storm outlets toward Cooden, one of which has been broken for years and is finally being replaced - with one that extends all of 15m further out. For those that don't know, storm drains are unfortunately not just for water - sewage often contaminates the waste water, and Bexhill beach and water is often unsafe. Yesterday the next drain along broke, and has scoured a vast trench in the beach - and yes, it's pouring sewage contaminated water.

 Lauren

Good Morning, all.

Hope I find yourselves and your Families, well.

Yes, great memories Lauren and a far cry from where we are this Winter..

image.png.8ff16b6e424f9ba3a0a844623ae43991.png

Below, are a couple of archive charts [500hPa and 850hPa], from that very Wintry end to Winter 2018:

image.thumb.png.80654d01a0c38f254455b150c2950be2.png / image.thumb.png.c801fc0381322b5a4de06df50d37671f.png

My Wife and myself, have some vivid memories of that event.

Colette was working as a Senior Carer at a Residential Care Home, in nearby Chislehurst;/ Emstead Woods area.

The Close where we live turns into an Ice Rink a Day after it Snows, and Minicab drivers refuse to come to our door.

As there was no other way of getting into work and it certainly wasn't safe to walk the 2 and a half mile journey on such icy pavements and roads , it meant that Colette had to stay at the Care Home overnight, during that spell. As I was still in recovery after suffering an Haemorrhagic Stroke 2 and a half Years earlier, Colette didn't want to leave me at home.

As one of the Rooms of the Care Home was empty, my Wife's Manageress kindly agreed to me staying with Colette in that spare Room.

The Residents are notorious for wandering around in the middle of the Night, and trying to get into the Rooms of other Residents. My Wife took the precaution of locking the door, and as was expected we heard the door handle being tried, in the middle of that Night.

Outside of our Bedroom Window, the Snow lay thick, deep and even.

It reminded me of a scene from the film, "The Shining".

When our door handle was tried, I'm sure I heard a voice shout, "Here comes Johnny".

Below, is a Youtube video of a Sky News report entitled, "The Week Britain Froze":

Despite all the encouraging noises regarding Teleconnections and an expected SSW, this Winter is going out like a damp but mild squib.

The Daffs are blooming and it's noticeable how vociferous the Dawn Chorus is every Morning, now that Spring is around the corner.

Thanks for reminding me though Lauren, some great memories of that spell, even if they were a bit spooky in that Care Home.

Regards,

Tom Q. 👍

Neilsouth don't know if it was forecast or not, but duetowind direction, I was expecting it, and didn't bother watering my seeds in yesterday evening, soil was damp anyway, and I could already feel the change to what we had this morning, in the air, so to speak.

Absolutely nothing to do with the weather right now, but I just came across this and thought some might enjoy this. My kind of forecast.
I genuinely remember this forecast, I was 17 at the time, probably not long back from the pub when it aired.
