1. I thought I might share these First, from the snow that saw in the new year. The first one is the church next to my house and the second of Gloucester Docks On Feburary 27th an unseasonal convective cell suprised me with a rotating updraft after it rained on me, shot near Gloucester Much more recently on the 8th June I took a mosey down the motorway to chase some promising looking showers/storms. One cell near Bristol reportedly had a funnel, I think this may be that cell. It certainly had some suspicious lowerings under it as I approached. Unfortunately by the time I got there stuff was already beginning to die off due to high pressure re-establishing. This was shot looking South toward Bristol as it was dissipating. And a couple of stills of the same cell Plus heres a few more, couple of sundogs and some cool Cirrus
2. No storms for the UK then Good job ill be in France on saturday under that pink dot of 2500j/kg CAPE and -6LI!
3. I was just looking at that, loads of towers mushrooming up and anviling out all over Spain & Portugal. One week till im in the South of France with a car
4. Nice to see the potential so close to home! My only day off is Thursday so thought I could rule out tomorrow as a chase day, but since I dont start till 5pm and Ian has said things may kick off earlier rather than later, Its ON! Fuel in tank, batteries charged, should prob go to sleep Thundery dreams all x
5. Argh! Gutted, have been at work since 11am, just got back and looked at the radar for the day. What a catch 22. Gotta work to have a car, cant chase if your at work! Im pleased for us Gloucestershire peeps though; Lynxus, Dogs, especially Jane Louise! Heres to a good year, and if not then im off to France for the first two weeks of July anyway.
6. Right im off for a drive, intercept the cells nr Hereford. Just a short hop up the M5. Its not 400 miles away so I wont cry if they fizzle! Hope I bring back some photos for yall.
7. The combined power of the Chelt/Glos Urban Heat Island effect & Jane Louises prayers should do it!
8. Thunderstorm in Weston? Nothing on radar to suggest it The stuff over cornwall dont look very promising for us really I dont think
9. Looks like somethings gonna happen for the SE corner tonight, wish I was down there! Showers/storms moving verrrry slowly ENE but also propagating West some. Classic Kent clipper? If anyone knows of any jobs down that way lemme know as im seriously considering moving. Edit: Lightning showing up nicely from these cells on the Iceland lightning tracker. Wake up Eastbourne!
10. Looking interesting, heading right for me! But I gotta go to work now
11. Found one for UK for August, this wasnt on the METO website but comes from them so they probably have more on there. Nice map though, just need one for Europe now! Edit: Have now found a pdf giving UK averages for the whole year and all four seasons seperately Here
12. Hi, Dont know where else to post. Im looking for a map like the one below but for Europe / UK. Anyone have one or know where I may find one? Im sure ESTOFEX must have something like this but I cant seem to find it
13. Yup, they grew pretty fast too. Seems the interesting activity today is a bit further East than first forecast, fingers crossed it propagates a little further west and survives long enough for me and JL! Nothing but some rain and a few interesting clouds here so far today
14. Well it's nearly upon us anyway. Ive been searching for UK storm videos on YouTube and seems a lot of them are from May and June and May is only 5 weeks away! April could well bring some suprises too. I know this year ill be chasing anything I can, hopefully youll see video of one of the 30 or so tornados we apparently get each year. All I gotta do is buy a car.... These pics are from my chases in '09. Even though it was relatively quiet theres always something worth chasing!
15. I didnt have my tripod with me unfortunately so I had to rest it on the railings above the motorway :S I did it over the central reservation just incase I did knock the camera off lol Ive got my heart set on a job up in Scotland actually, find out if ive got an interview in the next couple of weeks so it may be that ill be up there with you getting jealous of those southeasterners and their semi continental climate Thanks for the kind comments!
16. Jane Louise - Im a fellow Gloucester person now, I was over near Stonehouse but now Im Gloucester proper! Sorry to say I feel like im already out of the no storms club though due to this happening the other day: Keep watching the skies!
17. Ok, Sorry I didn't get to it straight away but like I said I wanted to speed up the vid clips and it took me a while to work out how. Anyway, I've linked to three videos, two of the rotation and one of the cell with its inflow line. The rotation in the panoraminc one is just to the right of the motorway. Also, I have posted the radar grabs from the time. I actually first noticed it at around 3:50 pm and stopped filming around 4:05pm. Seems like there was almost nothing there and I feel sure that the reports from my co worker of heavy rain and hail must have been from the earlier cell ~1:30pm as this on didn't cross his area. The vids are taken from above the M5, just a little further north than where the railway track intersects it just south of Gloucester: Edit: forgot to mention that the updraft vids are sped up by 4x
18. Strange time of year to see it but it really happened! Earlier on ( ~ 3:30pm 27th Feb) I was cycling to work and was lamenting the weather for chosing that moment to pour with rain on me. Just after it passed over, along with a meek rainbow I noticed a interesting ragged cloud base. On closer inspection it was the back end of the shower that got me wet with a long inflow line. Where this inflow met with the main cell the cloud base was rotating and lowered in a wall cloud. No funnel became discernable while I could see it but it was rotating for a good while as I watched. I dont know how long it had been doing so before I noticed. Mentioning this later to a co worker they told me they had experienced very heavy rain and some hail from whats most likely the same cell. Tomorrow I will upload the video I have of the rotation plus some photos and post them here along with any other info I can get to make a little report. Im afraid the vid will be slightly poor quality being as I had no tripod and its only a point an shoot stills cam. Still it is fairly obvious, especially viewed at 3x speed. Ill try and save it as such. Still, a very welcome and exciting event to whet the appetite for the 2010 storm season!
19. mmm still sultry summer evenings when it doesnt seem to get any cooler, and the very first clouds of the day appear hinting at a great night in store. So much more exciting than Christmas ever was I think! :o I'd like to get my first real photo of lightning so bring on the night time imports! Chasing may just be the one thing I need a car for, so ill have to get one in the summer. Shame because I actually quite like cycling instead...
20. Thats epic, beeb forcasting heavy snow tonight for us here in Gloucester and up to 40cms in the Wiltshire Downs. We had heavy snow for ~1 hour earlier which gave an inch and its been snowing gently since but I cant see us getting alot more really unless something happens later tonight. I would upload pics of snow on the iced over docks in Glos but I cant find my usb cable
21. Seriously, utterly, amazing! That vid of the highlights, especially the very last discharge, is just brilliant. I live to see lightning like that, next year i hearby swear I will! Im from Stroud (im sure u know of it) and a friend of mine is out there working for the summer at the moment, his facebook posts along with these vids are making me most jealous!
22. Yeah and have all but died out over Cornwall and Devon where they were heading for us ><
23. What lightning detection are you looking at? I cant see anything on NW, Strikestar or Meteoex although Someones posted the same on UKWW.
24. Cant believe you didnt see anything! My mum rang me from work in Glos to tell me there was thunder there. I saw a fair bit of IC lightning around 2.30 where I was at work in Stroud, and heard the thunder from a few CGs. We also had quite a few overflowing drains etc. Second best storm of the year for me in my home town
25. Quite suprised that very few people are mentioning the current situation, somethings going on this evening as the CF pushes in. Showers popped up pretty fast around Blackpool and have gone electrified. Shows up well Here Showers are also rapidly developing now further south on the front, off the coast of Cornwall and Wales. Altho CAPE etc is higher around Blackpool I wouldnt be totally surprised if we get something here in Gloucestershire! Edit: Just started raining from high based Cu, also had some pretty awesome Altocumulus and cirrocumulus earlier
