  1. It's been a nice June here so far, temperatures consistently in the high 20s so not too hot but galaxies away from the cold, wet crud which blighted the second half of May. Almost no rain either, with just one brief downpour the other day (one local weather station is still on zero rainfall).

Things should heat up properly next week with temperatures into the 30s. Loving the lack of coolness and freshness!

  2. 12C and lashing it down at 4pm. A reminder that the average high here for this time of year is about 22-23C.

I'm really at my wits' end now. I can't go for my walks in nature because everything is muddy and many routes are simply impassable. Then there's the conundrum of trying to dry clothes and keep the flat warm without proper heating (the gas for the radiators has been stopped, because it shouldn't be needed this close to summer). Such crud.

  3. Lashed it down for most yesterday and didn't get above 14C. If we're lucky we might hit the dizzy heights of 18C today.

Still nothing even average on the horizon. Day 7 might creep above 20C but even that's a big if at this stage (and would still be below average). I don't recall ever seeing such unremitting cold output in the models before. It's going to be the third poor May in a row for sure.

After a sudden 3 day hot spell here (Sunday-Tuesday), it’s been absolutely chucking it down nearly non-stop since with a big cool-down. Currently 11°C with heavy rain and plenty more to come over the next 10 days, by the looks of it. Weather lore here says that a cool, wet May is usually followed by a hot summer, we shall see.

Here went from an afternoon temperature of 29C on Tuesday to 14C on Wednesday. Today has a weather warning for rain lasting all day and temperatures no higher than 13C.

The latest ECM is as bad as it gets. Highest forecast maximum in the next ten days is 19C with only two other days supposed to reach 16C. Average high here for May is 22C. What a horror show.

Finally losing that God-awful, freezing wind here. I can’t remember such a cold spring, the chill has been relentless. Today, tomorrow and Tuesday look much warmer (23°C, 27°C and 27°C expected, respectively) with plenty of sunshine and chances of thunderstorms later on Tuesday. Much more my cup of tea.

Latest ECM is a horror show from Wednesday onwards. Shades of May 2019. I hope to god it doesn't come off.

For around half of the month, even top temps were slightly below average. For me personally, it didn't feel too bad but it was tedious after a little while. Part of the fun about spring is the progression in temperature (like with autumn but the other way round). There wasn't really much of that this April.

I find that spring tends to yo-yo between hot and cold a lot more than autumn, which more often than not seems to me like one long gradual slump towards winter.

The yo-yoing has been quite extreme this year though.

  7. Well yesterday was fairly pleasant until a strong cold front blew through in the afternoon bringing gusty winds, heavy rain and some lightning. The temperature dropped from 19C to 9C in about two hours. Fortunately there's a big warm-up coming next week (up to 28C) just in time for my birthday. Hopefully I'll get to have a few drinks outside!

An indication of the warming climate is the observation that Spring 2021 has so far been close to the 1961-1990 average, with the warm March and cold April almost exactly counterbalancing each other, though the cold weather occurring later in the season means that vegetation is probably currently running behind the 1961-1990 average.  I'm left wondering how backward things would've been in early May 1979, following a cold winter and March, a near average April (relative to 1961-1990) but with wintry showers early and late in the month, and then an unusually cold snowy start to May.  1917 and 1951 are other years that were unusually cold up to this point in the year.

Try to imagine what 1740 must have felt like up to this point.

Some people like to blabber on about how it snowed in June that year, but never follow on with mentioning the warm/hot temperatures which followed a week later.

I think the warm summer that year has been overshadowed by 1976.

I mentioned Spring 1975 with regard to the exceptionally mild winter which preceded it. There must have been a lot of early blooms which perished.

  10. It's going to be the coldest April here since at least 1997 and possibly further back. 1938 looks like the most recent April which is definitely unbeatable. The rest of the month is set to remain below average, with a highest temperature of 16C on the 30th (and even that's still in the unreliable term).

To think that it was 25C at the very start of the month. There can't be many Aprils where the 1st has given the highest temperature. April has certainly fooled me this year!

Compared to populous places which should be measured against as this is where a lot of people are experiencing the weather, Manchester is undoubtedly wet. We’re talking about the U.K. here I don’t care about Saharan Africa has no relevance.

I didn't mention Saharan Africa but since you did, Cairo is bigger than London and gets hardly any rain.

My point was, wet and dry are not absolutes. "Manchester is undoubtedly wet" compared to London but in UK terms? It's not so straightforward. Internationally, the whole of the UK (including London) has a reputation for being wet, most likely due to the nature of the rainfall rather than the actual amount.

More sleet/graupel showers today. Meanwhile there's a foot of snow on the nearby hills (about 500m). Sadly by the time I get a chance to visit it will probably be all gone.

I love a bit of reverse psychology. It was more like two feet in some places! In others though it was starting to turn slushy, and there was almost none left on the forest canopy exposed to the sun.

I had the place to myself pretty much, and the untouched snow looked so pristine.
