still snowing here ..woke up to snow and -4c... been a pretty damp cold spring so far save the odd day here or there

Crazy. 25C and sunny here at noon. Might reach 30C tomorrow. Snow feels like a distant memory right now!

It's been a warm and thundery May here so far, in contrast to the last three (which could have easily passed for crappy Octobers).

  2. Anyway, the weather has flipped here too. Gone from 20C and cloudless skies to 6C and cloud today, with snow expected tomorrow. March was looking to be exceptionally dry (3mm up to the 30th) before 10-15mm on the last day ruined it (we obviously needed the rain but couldn't it have waited one more day?). Regardless, there's still a large rainfall deficit so far this year, with all three months failing to reach 20mm. This has been matched by an abundance of sunshine (March logged an impressive 235 hours; January and February both easily exceeded 100).

  3. From a wintry perspective, the first half of winter was okay - some mild spells but also cold periods with decent snowfalls. February however has been a horror show, probably one of the warmest on record: lowest maximum has been 4.0C and only two days out of 25 have failed to surpass 5.0C. Five frosts out of 25 is also pathetic. I'm just surprised there was a light overnight snowfall early in the month (melted quickly the next morning of course). At least it's been largely dry and sunny.

Pretty lively weather day here with a squall line going through earlier with very heavy snow for a time, then the giant polystyrene balls type of snow with lightning and thunder. Some very strong gusts of wind, too, when it calmed down all I could hear were sirens for a while. Now sunny and very blustery from the NW, 2°C.

That must have been the same stuff that hit me this afternoon. I left home in the sunshine for a stroll in the forest when I suddenly got caught out in horizontal snow. Didn't see it coming at all!

Looking ahead to next week - oh dear, pass please, the dreaded SW wind back and its associated gunk and rain, oh why oh why is it here during christmas week, last thing I want, sod's law, hope come January it doesn't come back again!

You can thank me for that. Every time I'm back here over Christmas the weather is always dismal, even when the winter as a whole has had its good moments.

Quarantine doesn't seem so bad at the moment!

I cant wait to go now. Shame the real cold spell will have abated by the time we're there but we'll get into the mountains for a day or two, so i might see a bit of the good stuff this winter at least! Any handy phrases i should learn? I've learnt a few phrases from her but my slovak is 1/10 as it stands hahaha.

How about "prosím si pivo" (a beer, please) for starters? jules216 was the resident Slovak on here but he was recently scared away from the forum, sadly.

My other half is back home in Zilina and I’ve borderline asked her to stop sharing snow pictures with me! (Nothing risqué I promise ) I fly out on the 28th for NYE and not sure what to expect, but the snow in Slovakia is certainly enviable.

I used to live in Žilina! The scenery up that way is something else. It's definitely colder than Bratislava too.

I'm flying to the UK today. It's a shame it's not looking as seasonal as it previously was, though the outlook for Bratislava is pretty boring too so I won't be missing out much.

There was no settled Snow in my Area this winter appart from 2x2cm that melted in 6 hours. Only narrow Strip of SW got about 10cm. It Has been the worst 1st half of december along with total snowless autumn I remember ever in my Lifetime.

Had at least 20cm last week here in tropical Bratislava; closer to 40cm in parts of the Malé Karpaty. It mostly thawed on Tuesday but even today there are still patches left in the city centre:

I think you've been unlucky. It reminds me a bit of December 2019 but in reverse; Košice had a lot of snow but there was virtually nothing here. Let's just hope the rest of this winter pans out better than that one did!

Warnings of a ‘calamitous snow situation’ here in the Czech Republic too tomorrow, up to 25cms expected in some areas with warnings of problems to transport and energy supplies. Quite an exciting start to winter here, though it’s been very cloudy much of the time.

Yeah, I've noticed words like "kalamita" and "katastrófa" get thrown around quite casually when it comes to heavy snowfalls in Slovakia, though their usage doesn't always correspond exactly with their English counterparts.

Could be a memorable event this. I've just seen one article saying this could be Bratislava's biggest snowfall since 2013 (uvidíme!). Currently got about 5cm lying.
