I do have grass and I've seen it brown on a number of occasions though. It's definitely not a once in 20 year thing around here.

Of course it isn't as common as in the south and east.

In 2006 the grass was certainly brown where I was living.

As for heat, Manchester does okay compared to most central towns and cities in England. Southerly or southeasterly flows are ideal here and easterlies are pretty good too.

There is a very sharp drop off to the rest of the NW region though- places like Preston and Blackburn don't do nearly as well and Liverpool gets a lot of sea breezes.

It goes without saying that we will never do as well as the SE though.

Liverpool also does well in S/SEerly flows. In these instances, sea breezes tend to be offset by offshore winds. In fact, I'm pretty sure Crosby (right on the beach) has a higher all-time maximum than Ringway.

The worst wind direction is NWerly: always rubbish in summer and nearly always rubbish in winter.

Outlook for the immediate future looks poor, and poorer than I'd have expected 3-4days ago, cold frosty nights, short amounts of brightness then quickly clouding over leading to cold days at just 8-10C. Latest GFS has nowhere getting near average for at least another 10days before plunging us into another very cold northerly towards the end of the month.

Certainly the coldest April since 1989 which was 6.6C and the only sub 7C in that time, 1986's 5.8C was the second coldest of the 20th Century behind 5.5C from 1922. 1922 & 1986 defo safe as current CET is 5.7C and should nudge up a touch. 6.5-7.0C looks a good bet.

Don't forget 1917 at 5.4C. The first half was the coldest in the CET record (2.6C).

Currently 18C and sunny. I'm soaking up the sun on the balcony before tomorrow's dramatic plunge back into winter. I'm expecting snow to fall but not to stick. We'll see.

  3. But Scorcher, I could just as easily call your original comment a sweeping judgement and going on the attack. Unless there really are people on here fascinated with plants dying, I don't think it was unreasonable to interpret it as a dig.

And no, I'm most definitely not a saint and I admit I could have responded better than I have done. I think a lot of us are at our wit's end right now. It's been a tough winter.

I know what you're saying about people guilt tripping others but I don't do that and I don't think I did that here.

My views differ from the mainstream on this forum but I've been a member for 15 years and although others may not agree with my views I don't guilt trip others for their preferences.

So I don't appreciate you levelling that at me or making assumptions about my intentions.

    Slightly hypocritical as well really.

"Many are fascinated by potential damage to plants on this forum which is one of the things I don't understand- that is what concerns me most about Monday and Tuesday."

I'm willing to admit I miscontrued your post, but how else am I supposed to interpret this?

This is all I'm taking issue with.

I just don't want to see plants and flowers damaged by the cold...what's wrong with that? I'm allowed to express some frustration. Just like other people have a right to get excited about this.

I haven't said people can't do that...just that I don't understand it. You are free to disagree with me as well.

And it's nothing like the other examples you've given. I just don't want to see plants die!

Of course you're allowed to express frustration - I do it all the time! But there's a difference between not understanding someone's viewpoint and making insinuations about them. You can't expect not to ruffle some feathers when you claim that other people want plants to die based on nothing but the fact that they happen to like the weather that can cause it.

I know you like hot weather (so do I) so I'm pretty confident you loved Summer 2018. Would it have been fair for others to accuse you then of being fascinated by the killing of plants due to drought/wildfires? Of course not - you were entitled to enjoy the weather even if it brought misery to others. Sitting inside and feeling bad about it wouldn't have helped relieve the drought. And so it is now. Some people prefer cold weather and get excited by any snow prospects. It doesn't mean they're rubbing their hands in glee and laughing maniacally at the thought bad things may come of it.

I don't mean to have a go, but it just frustrates me how often arguments break out because people can't express their own frustrations about the weather without guilt-tripping others because they happen to like the forecast. You don't like what's coming (me neither), others do. That's all there is to it really.

I personally don't want it to go cold again, but this is disingenuous. It's like saying anybody who likes cold winters or hot summers hates old people. The fact is, everything but boring, mundane weather is likely to have adverse effects in some form or another.

Not that temperature swings in spring are even that unusual.

  7. It means that the highest recorded Feb-Mar temperature in any given year has never been lower than 39F. This year the highest forecast Feb-Mar temperature is only 38F, so a new cold record is possible.

The wording with these things can be confusing, like the country with the lowest highest elevation and the one with the highest lowest elevation (the Maldives and Lesotho if you were wondering).
